One important question that has not been asked.
Does this Savage 99 have a scope?
I have been assuming that it does.
First thing I would do is check all the screws on the rifle. Then I would check all the screws on the scope and mounts.
Then I would close in to 25 yards and shoot a group and adjust at that range. The 25 yard range should put a scope dead on at 200 yards. It should also reveal any shifting in scope mounts or scope internals that have gone goofey.
With a Savage 99 I will almost guarentee that it is scope or iron sights that have gone spooky rather than the rifle. The Savage 99 does not just quit shooting right.
As far as long range shooting at game goes. Remember that any high velocity cartridge, .243/.308/30-06/.270 is still going to drop nearly 6 feet ( yes, six feet) between the muzzle and 800 yards, and the bullet takes nearly a full second to reach the target. At 800 yards a deer appears half the size of the period at the end of this sentence.
Can you really judge precise range at that distance?
So far, I have to say, sourdough is spot on about the mod 70's aesthetics,and kyratshooter deserves a green thingie for the advice he's given. Flanders, if you're shooting anything with a .243 get 'em in closer like Uncle Sourdough said.

Knowledge can replace a lot of money. I see a lot of nice rifles but that does not mean the owner can shoot them and most often is an indication they can't shoot relying on the gun to do it all. My guess is the scope is not positioned properly. In grade school we all learned that it takes 2 points to define a line. With Iron sights you have 2 points but a scope only has one and the second is the consistent position of your head to the rifle. Thjis is called a "spot weld". Check this positioning by closing your eyes and shouldering rifle, then open eyes. You should have a full picture without having to move. If you have to move that is where your inconsistency is. Scope rings and bases come in many variations for positioning scopes. You should also note that different shooting positions may change your spot weld so if you are shooting accurately at your 100 yard rifle range sitting at a bench you may find a difference using another position in the field where you have your longer range. From here I'm just guessing and the is much to know. It takes a good rifle, good ammo and a good shooter to make good shots. It's like a 3 legged stool, you need all three. Knowing how to manipulate your sight picture is almost a lost art these days and much less expensive and more practical for the survivalist.
AKS, the purpose of the scope is to combine the two planes of reference inside the scope. This eliminates variations in focus and sight alignment, giving the imopression of only one plane of focus.
The Spot weld is to stabilize the exit pupil at the proper eye relief setting. Movement of the crosshairs in relation to vision/target is called paralax and good scopes have adjustments for this feature. Most better model fixed power scopes will have paralax set at a specific range.
A cheap long range gun? No such thing out of the box. Anything cheap is going to need some TLC to make it work. (for me that is 90% of the fun) As stated, you will need to spend as much for the scope as for the "cheap" gun.
At 500+ yards we are not talking about a 3-9 variable from Wallmart. You will need a dedicated "whatever-to-20+ power optic" just to identify the target.
I would suggest luring the deer closer with a salt block! Gonna be way cheaper!
Sounds very scientific but all you have to do is solidly rest rifle and move your head around to see point of impact change. Some scopes can off set this to some degree like pistol scopes set for close range or the ones with adjustable objective lenses, still there is movement if used at anything other than the distance it's set at. Eye relief is just distance to scope but alignment is the critical factor and if head has to stretch. Disassemble scope and you will only see one reticle except for Shepperd scopes. Daniel Boone made a shot a mile long into a nieghbors door to warn him of an Indian attack. The worlds greatest sniper did not use a scope. Big dollar scopes is just one way, there are others. I think you will agree that aligning your eye with the center of scope will make you a better shot.Quote:

All very sound advice.
I would not take a 700 yd shot, mostly because I would have to hump over there and see if I hit anything or not, if I didn't see it fall, and I hunt in pretty hilling country.
Lots of pakages avalible, starting at a couple of grand, for a tricked out rifle, of a suitable caliber, and a set up scope, (almost as much money for a good long distance scope).
Even if I could afford it, I not sure that anything need to die that bad.
Just my 2 cents.
I like my 7 mm mag, and I also don't like chasing stuff much, anymore.
700 yards in KY means there are three ridges between you and the target!
That would be about 3 miles of straight up and down with three creeks and a half dozen laurel thickets to tippy-toe through and six peoples' property lines to cross.
I have shot at targets at 700 yards, and actually hit some at 800, but never a living game animal.
Most of my hunting is in places where the best hi-tech advantage one can have is a red dot, cause you only see green haze in the scope and there is no way you are going to pick up iron sights. I have actually committed the travisty of placing a red dot on a 94 Winchester.
