I miss some of those who were here when I 1st came on like Foggy Bottom & SurvivalHike; But that's only for personal reasons. They brought there own perspective to this forum in a refreshing way. I'm still here to teach & moderate. The forum has. in some areas, changed/morphed into a more "political/TSHTF" perspective that I can live without, but there are those who like to get into "doom & gloom"; I just don't happen to be one of them. I miss Brad & Adrian because they gave us all fuel for debate/discussion on what this Forum is all about...WILDERNESS survival!!!!
I totally dislike both TheFreakinBear, the Heathen Chinee Spambots, Trolls & Spammers! I have little to do with people who come on here without 1st posting a DECENT intro, or none at all.
well one of the old forum members have responded all we need now is rick and coot and that will take care of the old timers. As for myself i have been around here for a while also most have come and gone w/o nuch of a second thought from me, same with my life people come and go and i don't pay no mind, i liked beo wulf not sure why he's not around much i guess busy and i'm glad owl girl is back, that one guy vol west was interesting wish he would come back and i could do w/o remy.
i think things are getting back on track after the exit of bragg i know i try to post topics or ask survival (wilderness and urban not finacial) questions but things are going great
On the topic of going. I was reading a forum intro the other day and one of the rules was about going. It said: if you want to go just go you don't need a parade. I think that was a good idea.
A Warrior prepares for the battles he has, not the battles he would like to have. I don't like the Doom and Gloom stuff, but it is clearly the, "Wolf at the door". Pretending the Wolf is not there, does not change life from the prospective of the Wolf. The Financial System will do what it will, the warrior will step aside, as the wolf attacks. The unprepared will be wolf poop.
I get along ok with most folks as they come and go and I think a lot of folks just sort of decide, well that's all I need from that and move on, just like in life. I've gained an interest in a lot of the things people post about what they're doing in their lives and I check in to see how those things are going. Hopefully, I can contribute to the wilderness stuff still, I know I can still learn. I don't worry much about the shtf scenarios, because I'll do whatever I have to do.
Alpine Sapper was back the other day. There was a fella here long time back named dennis...I think dennis k, he went by and there was rusty. Those two both had really good wilderness experience to share with people. I kinda been missing beo too, like WE said, guess he's busy. But, it's just like anywhere else I guess folks come and go, some stay. If I leave I'm not expecting a parade...a huge drunken farewell party would be nice but a parade's a bit ostentatious :D
Well, to be honest, some of my huge drunken parties have turned into parades at some point. The parade always seemed to wind up at the town drunk tank though...hmmm..... I guess since Free Traxistan is pretty much in my head, I can have a parade there any time I want, I've already got the 'woodland jamboree' playing in there pretty regularly.
I was thinking about your original question though, and really, I think a lot of what brings me back here is there are so many like minded people (goofing around notwithstanding) when it comes to wilderness subjects
I still hang around, been a little busy lately but I don't know all I would like to know and never will. Seems like there are a lot of good people on here, don't put each other down and ain't thin skinned, well most ain't. I don't mind opinions different than mine. I am mostly conservative, religious, patriotic & family oriented. As for everybody else to each his own the farmer said as he kissed his pig. Let's just keep politics, religion and dislike of country no matter where you live out of here. That's my sermon for the day.
hey trax i remember that parade wasn't it in downtown toronto this summer?
The forum hase changed alot. It use to be more serious and pople stuk to the suject more but it was less personal then it evend out more to where it was more laid back and personal with a lot of joking but people still stuk to the subject more. It was less structured. Now its really laid back and seems harder to find subjects that havnt been discussed.
Im not on as much cuz Im out side doing what ive learnd here. Thats what it was all about. last night I slep outsid in a debris shelter and it got down to 15 plus the wind chill. I had a nice sleeping bag so I was warm enough. Today me and my bf are going to try to tan a hide from a deer that was given to us by a friend of a friend.
I'm still here - trying to practice my current signature tag a bit more...
Forums can be great sources of info & feedback. They can also become shouting matches between total strangers....
Initially, one of my interests was TSHTF scenarios - not because of the conspiracy theory nonsense, but because I saw what happened in the mass evac from Hurricane Rita. I don't ever want to be one of the masses stuck on the road w/ no gas, no water, no plan - Amazing how people with lots of money discovered that the almighty dollar was worthless if there was nothing to buy....
So - this forum has gotten me thinking a lot more about possible "what if's" that I might encounter. Not too many bears or wolves here in Dallas... but the possibility of needing to get out of Dallas quickly due to disaster, terrorism, bio outbreak, etc - this forum has helped me engage the brain.
One of the coolest topics running is the "What have you done to prepare...." thread.
An engaged brain is a good thing, which must be translated into actions.
- Free the mind and the azz will follow
- Platoon
Aw jeez dennis, my apologies, you are dennis k. alright. It was donny, and I think he used k as a last initial too, but I might be wrong. Anyway, yeah you're definitely here, I can tell.
and WE, that parade? was that you in that chartreuse feathered number?...that kind of parade? I don't know much about the big TO so.....
Yes, when I heard all the talk of "Golden Whores" leaving the city to look for homes in the wilderness, I started to prepared ASAP, washed up extra clean, squirted some WD-40 back of each ear. Still waiting for the "Golden Whores", and running low on WD-40. This is why I get so excited about Doom and Gloom.........:):)
Remember, "Paint your Wagon"....?
Not vividly. Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin right?
Holy psychic connection Batman! I was just this very morning thinking about a movie that Lee Marvin sang in, didn't he sing something like "born under a wandering star"?
I wasn't here when it began, but looking at a lot of the archived threads it appears that there are many, many more knowledgeable members. Kind of makes sense.Quote:
How has this forum changed since it began?
I wish that those that taught me a lot were still around. Some that come to mind are Adventure Doc and Beo. I'm kind of hoping that they are not gone, but rather just taking a break.Quote:
Are there any who are not here and you wish they were? Why? What did they bring to this forum?
Because I enjoy this forum. I learn a lot. Every now and then I hope that I have given somebody some knowledge they did not have before.Quote:
Why do you stay around?
I believe I do, but thanks for asking.;)Quote:
Don't you know how to survive ?:D
kid_couteau and carcajou garou come to mind.
Yep, there is some missed knowledge without them. Ya know I was thinking about Bragg when Rebel asked the question. Yeah, I miss him......the thing is, I started missing him about six months ago when the majority of his posts turned to what they did.
Well Crash, when you put it that way it makes me think of quite a few who are no longer on the forum, calls to mind that old expression "of all the things I've lost in life, I think I miss my mind the most"
Sure, the forum has changed. It ebbs and flows with the hot topics of the day and with those that come and go. I just IM'd with Alpine Sapper over the last two days. I told him I'd like to see him on more but his work has him all tied up. Life events happen and we adjust. It was always nice to hear from him.
I do miss Adventure Doc, AKS, Corn Dog, Native Dude, and even Michbowguy although he's kinda new. They all have a lot of wisdom to impart and I always enjoy(ed) reading their posts.
1st, I do not "pretend that the wolf is not there"; I threw the "rose-colored glasses out a long time ago. 2nd, if you try to prepare for every possible scenario then you spread yourself pretty thin. My family & I have narrowed down all the likely "trouble spots" that's significant to where we live & have prepared accordingly, as well as continuing to "shore up the weak areas." I simply do not wish to divulge all of this just for the sake of this group; what we do is our own buisness. Besides, politics bores the crap outta me!
Oh, I left out Jay. Like to see him around, too. He's got a wealth of knowledge. Sorry, Jay.
Jay was on this week....but yeah - wish he was around a bit more.
Actually, Bragg's jokes were his best stuff. I was MC at our Magic Club performances last time & used his cannibal jokes, they went over great!:D
Then there was the guy with the $1,500 custom-made knife; a "folder" yet.(Tar-Heel Fan?):D
How about Smok? Anyone heard from him in awhile?
There have been some that hung around for a week or so, then were never heard from again; don't think this was their kind of site.
Then there are those who post a thread without even an intro, ask a question, and vanish!
I'm leaving out someone, or someones, but I'll remember them & post when I do.
I think it's about the same. This site attracts a diff. kind of survival thinking crowd, the not so "we hope the SHTF" crowd.Quote:
How has this forum changed since it began?
People come and go. I've bumped to some folks on this site and then bumped into them on other sites. The world is not as large as some think.Quote:
Are there any who are not here and you wish they were?
I just surfed on and stayed like some, some just pass on through. The info. is out there, no one person has it all.Quote:
What did they bring to this forum?
No one person has all the info., I've learned things from the newbies just as they've learned for the old salts.Quote:
Why do you stay around? Don't you know how to survive
Let's not forget that great Aussie: SOE Digital that gave us our term for people like Brad & Adrian: "NUMPTY!":D:rolleyes::cool:
spiritman hasnt posted in a long time
I mostly remember the ones who proved Ignorance is no excuse for stupidity and some people shouldn't be allowed to reproduce. I ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer but I look downright brilliant just proving that sometimes when the thinking gets extra deep ignorance is bliss, so I am mostly happy just reading and learning that anyone can come up with a good idea sometimes. This stuff you can't get out of a book, all sorts of first hand experience. I just had to learn to pick fly crap out of pepper to learn a little bit more outside my comfort area.
standing ovation the crowd goes wild- picking fly crap out of pepper come on folks nobody does it better-que in theme music
