kx - here's a thread on them http://www.wilderness-survival.net/f...ead.php?t=1053
Military 6X6 it has 10 wheels all chained up. burns gas or diesel or motor oil or mothballs and water. It has a 12" bed. Drop that baby in 10 wheels driving, and it will walk over top of most cars.
Hard to beat a Ski-Doo Super Wide-Track on land or snow or openwater if you really want to get out of dodge. She'll do about 100 miles on a 10 gallon tank of fuel. you can haul about 800 pounds behind it, depends on snow pack.
I have been looking at a Honda Helix with a trailer. 70mpg. 2 wheels for getting in the out of the way places.
I have a friend that has a Schwin with trailer. He can cover 5 miles on hour(on the roads) with all his gear. I know for a fact; he took it on a test run and did 100 miles of back desert, cross country to a camp ground he met his better half at. He says it is the only way, to get gone, without the worry of gas prices.
Gas, for me, would be the issue! I would want to have a way to move without the expence of gas or the need of it.

For ideas you could always look at what tends to win the Paris-Dakar as they have to go through some rough terrain and need the storage space for the trip. I think Unimogs are quite popular. Kamaz trucks have won about seven times i think, and they are Russian built so must be fairly hardy to say the least.
All this exotic stuff! Mine is a remote control and an oversized Lazy Boy recliner.:D
If I have to leave I have the van and the truck. Otherwise, I'm stayin' right here.
It is interesting to read these posts. I guess a survival vehicle has a different meaning for everyone. I was watching the movie "Deep Impact" last night, and when everyone was fleeing the city, the roads were completely clogged. The main character avoided this by riding a dual-sport dirt bike. My thought is if gas ever became scarce/rare, we might need to ration every ounce, but I would still need to get from my home/fortress, to the woods to hunt. This would mean riding something EXTREMELY good on gas. My emergency/survival (on/off road) vehicles are a KLX-400SR dual-sport(50mpg), or 2 Zuma scooters (70mpg). I'd still like to get an old long track 2-up snowmobile for winter emergencies.
I'd like to have a vehicle better suited to off-road travel. Right now, I drive an Accord and the wife has a Civic. Neither one does well off road. However, the Accord is a 1996, and I paid cash for it in 2002. The Civic is 2003 and we have one more payment until it's free and clear. After that, we're going to take that payment and put it into a saving account until I can afford to pay cash for a newer car. I'd much rather earn interest than pay it.
Ideally, a newer vehicle would be something I could take off-road, but not necessarily a Bug Out Vehicle. If it ever came to it, I'd head to my wife's parents' house in middle Georgia. Lot's of land and horses, and firearms.
Hey, kx250kev, take the Zuma scooter. It's slower and easier to pick you off as you drive by. I hate those fast things. I have to lead you then if you slow down, I miss, such a hassle.
I have a 4X4 truck, Honda Rincon but they need gas. My backup plan is a 4ft WV credit card and a 5 gal can. $20 to fill the Rincon and I need a co-signer to fill the truck, any takers?
I'd be using exactly the same credit card Coot, don't know that WV issued it to me, but it works every time.:)
I have a few different survival tools for travel- some of them eat grass, some of them I feed deer. Either way they can travel at a decent clip into the mountains around me. As far as fleeing cities....I've already done that.
When I think of survival vehicles and gas wars- I think of Mad Max and that crazy guy in the gyrocopter. Max knew what was up- tight black leather pants make the ultimate survival fashion statement
Found a pic for that ...... nope - not gonna post it. I might save it, but I'm not posting it.
Clearly the Ferrari Enzo....
Probably a jeep. Cause I can't afford anything that's actually any good.
Here you go kx250kev,

wow..Mad Max woulda loved that thing
never mind Mad Max, I want one!
I thought the camo tires were pretty.
i think i'd have to go with a horse, honestly. anything that runs on a liquid fuel will run out eventually, unless you want to somehow make your own vegetable oil for a diesel or something. since we don't have fusion cars or solar-powered electrics yet, a horse is probably the best choice. also, horses repair themselves over time. try that with a fried alternator.
a bicycle would be a close second for me, and if it had a little gas or electric assist engine that'd be neat (until it broke - see above). if we're talking about a mad max-style dash with other people and your entire life's possessions, i would choose a land cruiser or jeep, with the smallest engine possible, and have a trailer for fuel.
My kayak. Gets me into town for free, into tucked away lakes, lets me watch bears, caribou, wolves and moose without them feeling bothered, and it makes me feel free and independent.
Uh, where are we driving this survival vehicle to?
Okay, here's my survival/bugout vehicle list:
Instant/Short Term Bugout? Cobra. 4.6 liter. FAAAAAST ride. Trunk is already loaded with bug-out/survival gear. Just add extra food. (Not that the thing is any good for grocery shopping - small trunk is already full.) Kids and family know where to meet me if necessary.
One Hour Notice/Long Term Bugout? Eddie Bauer Explorer. Back is already loaded with essential bug-out gear. Add extra gear, food and fuel - always ready to go - will take 20 minutes. Kids, family, and pets follow in the other Explorers, also loaded in 20 minutes. Extra 40 minutes spent posting on Wilderness Survival Forums.
Damn! Just remembered to include my iPod in my bugout kit. Good for playing pre-recorded "snapping noises" over and over again while on the road.
No personality type issues here. I lead, they follow. :D
1976 Toyota FJ40 Landcruizer. 8000 lb. winches front and back. Roof rack and rear rack. Weapons, whiskey and women.
Wanna' trade?
2000 Jeep wrangler
35x12.50 Bfg mud terran
6" rocky ready suspension lift w/ quick realse swaybars
Dual Dana 44's with lockers
9000lb winch
and when i run out of gas i still have the ultimate offroad vechicle....my own two feet
So, basically you all have great big heavy metal boulders when the fuel runs out, right?:D
Think mult-use items. Imagine what can be canabalized from a vehicle to be used in a survival situation. Lot's of possibilities.
"Why are you carrying that tire?"
"Crash said so. Shut up!"
"Okay."
Average tire will keep 10 men afloat.
packing the kids and the wife in the chevy and moving back into moms. her house is the the designated shtf meeting place.
nice bike needs bigger tires though:)
We are hunker-down / bug-in types... Not going to get on the clogged roads with the panicked masses.
Currently have an old ATV... looking at replacing with a Willy's army jeep (already found one).
Would like and may some day get a horse - we have a hay field that we do not harvest. We just let it go to seed every year.
Someone send me the link to the dealer for that thing.
