Photography blog

The main reason I joined recently (besides "running" into some nice people on one of the treads) is to learn. Although I scored pretty good on the survival quiz, I wouldn't rely on myself if it comes to survival in the middle of nowhere. The good news is that in the couple of days I am here, I learned a lot already. There are so many nice and knowledgeable people here, it’s unbelievable.

There is one thing I do know though (I hope) and that is how to take pictures. Since I have very little to offer as far as survival do's and don'ts are concerned, I thought I write a blog about something I do know. I reckon that many here like to take a picture or two when they are out and about and I was hoping there might be some interest in bringing home better keepsakes or even pictures to hang on the wall. There are some easy ways to improve the pictures with a few rules about composition, light etc. These rules are simple and easy to do, whether you have an expensive SLR or a Point and shoot.

I am sure there are many people here who are accomplished photographers, but this blog would be for the beginning or casual photographer.

It’s a little bit of work, so before I start writing it all up, what are the general thoughts about this? Good idea, just start a thread in the general discussion section, or who cares?

I think that's a great idea. I love to take pictures and am always looking for ways to improve them. I think quite a few people would be interested.

I second, third, fourth and fifth the blog. Every piece of knowledge is a tool in the toolbox. Sometimes those tools are for work and sometimes just for fun. Bring on the fun!!!

The image quality of even the cheapest entry level DSLR is better then any top of the line ultra-zoom P&S for several reasons such as the size of the sensor and today's lenses are not capable of delivering good quality with very large zoom ranges. It is too much of a compromise.

Also, a DSLR is a lot more flexible.

I like taking pictures too. I would love to learn more about techniques and "rules". Most of my pictures are limited to close ups for plants, and far-offs for landscapes. I think it's a good idea. Looking forward to your tute!

Just kidding. You have some nice blogs yourself! Do you know anything about mushroom species? I have some pictures with mushrooms I like to identify

I am almost done with my (extensive) blog part 1 about photography. Is there a way to insert pictures from a file? A photography blog without pictures is like shooting without bullets. I saw the 'manage attachment" option with a new post entry, but I don't see this in the blog section. Would it be better to post the whole thing in the tutorial section of the forum instead of the blog section?

If you use a photo hosting site, you can copy and paste a link with the img codes.

Thank you. I have some of them on my site, but those are all full size. The pictures I use are small. I actually just found out that I can have my own album here. That would work. Thanks again.

sorry, Rudy, I don't know anything about mushrooms. There are a few guys on here that do know shrooms though. Post away any that you need help with and one of those guys will surely help.

Ok. I tried to insert the pictures as per the instructions, but all I get is the infamous red x. The pictures should be within the max size limits. They are only 350 pixels for the longest side and less then 95Kb each. I put them on flickr

What do I do wrong?

Just found it Crash. I had to go to properties and copy the url for there. From all people this was something I should know. Hmmm..

There will be 3 parts initially. Part 1 and 2 are about composition. I had to split this because it only allowed me to insert 4 pictures and i had 8.
Part 3 will be about improving focus

Part 1 and 2 are up and running now.

This is all kindda new to me.

I liked parts 1 & 2. Looking forward to part 3.

I bought an entry level DSLR Canon EOS Rebel XS kit.

My granddaughters first birthday was yesterday and I took lots of photos. Some came out good and others not so much. LOL Though that definitely wasn't the camera's fault.

Also congratulations with your new camera. The XT is a good camera. You should be happy with it. It is normal that you have a lot of good and not so good pictures. Especially with a new camera. Lots of pictures is good. Memory (as film replacement) is cheap nowadays. The only advice I can give you right now is to read the manual. (photographers call it RTFM ) If you're done reading it, read it again, and again. If you're done with that, read it again. :)

I like the close-up. Although you used 1/250 shutter speed with 300mm (460mm) focal length, the eyes are sharp and that is good. With all living things, the eyes are most important. I can tell it was late in the afternoon and getting dark.

Early coming week, I will finish part 3 of my blog (Was very busy last week). This will be about how to improve focus and how to make a very portable camera support for less than 10 cents that actually works.

Actually, every time you take a picture and your camera saves that picture on the memory card, all the technical data that comes with the picture, such as F-Stop, SS, ISO, Camera brand and type, date, time of day etc. is also saved. Once you transferred that picture to your hard drive, you can right click on the picture and then go to properties. All the data is under one of the tabs. That is kinda magic isn't it?

Either way I could tell without looking at the data that you used 5.6 because of the shallow dept of field. Only a small section is sharp. This combined with 1/250 shutter speed and ISO 800, it had to be getting dark. I could also guess the ISO 800 because of the noise (grain) in the water. The higher the ISO, the more noise.

I had seen that data before. I never realized that it was so detailed for the DSLRs. I also didn't realize it was sent with the reduced images for web display. Thanks for the tips!

It stays with it until you take it off in the options when you safe it as a JPEG. It is a good feature. In the old film days, I wrote everything down what I did. Don't have to do that anymore.

BTW, if you safe a JPEG, make sure you go to the option field to make sure you safe it at the best quality settings. (for this, you might have to safe it as "safe as". There should be an opportunity for you to set the quality levels somewhere. Where depends on the software you use)
