The radio not the food....
I've been thinking about commacations lately and Rick mentioned a handheld radio on another thread, the Yaesu VX-6R.

Does anyone have experince with this or similer radios?
I like the portable aspect but will it do what i need in an emergency?
That is, get help to me.
Please forgive the spelling, new computer. I just downloaded ispell and will use it in the future.:blushing:

I don't have one - yet. When I went through CERT training, one of the classes was on communications. I was very impressed with the hand-helds in this class. I remember the instructor saying that you should be able to get 25 miles (real distance) minimum out of one. He also said that around town (Jacksonville) there are enough repeaters that you will probably get much greater distances.

Any radio you choose will be dependent upon the terrain you are in and the distance to the next radio. There is no guarantee that any of them will work for you regardless of how well they work.
I like that radio because the weather won't bother it. I can drop in the lake and it will still work, plus it's 5 watts, where CB is only 4 (factory).

I know nothing about them so any info is helpful.

IMHO you can't beat a yaesu radio. I have a 2 meter mobile unit in my jeep and am looking at another for my wifes jeep. Also just bought a pair or 10 meter mobiles and a base unit last week (used/refurbished) from the local shop as well.In an emergency ham commo will be a good idea IMO because of likelyhood of standard (telephone and cellular) systems will not work or be overloaded. The same with standard CB radio comm's. The alrernative would be a commercial system but you would then be limited to others on that/those specific frequency(s). Another place to check out is www.hamcity.com They have a good selection of equipment options as well.
