I have one of them high end ice fishing sleds and was considering using it on my upcoming camping trip. there's lots of rolling hills though, but I think I could manage it better than the 65-70 lb. pack unless the snow melts.
It all melted yesterday, but is back today. LOL!
I should get a good sled.
I have just used a tarp and even a cheap plastic sled to pull some stuff on snow in the past. Guess I am just cheap or with the little money I do have I concentrate on necessities. But I really am cheap... in many ways, some say just frugal. :yes:
I think a BOB sled (pardon the pun) is a perfect tool for winter and can also be used in summer if the terrain is flat. Of course, the sled is a much different design.
Here is a link that has some pretty good ideas for the harness and other options for pulling the sled. I have two, one is about 7 feet long X 20 inches wide, and I found it too tippy when used behind my snow machine,but cured that with some schedule 80 PVC pipe bolted to the sides like pontoons. Pulling sleds have been around for centuries. Key seems to be long, low and relatively narrow. Somewhat flexible also seems to be part of the design.

Retail was 49.95, but I got it new for 15 bucks. I'm fruegal too.
With the high sides it keeps stuff from falling out and snow from getting in, especially when pulling with a 4 wheeler or sled. I've tipped it up on edge and sat inside to use as a windbreak on the ice. I use a long 10-15' rope and it helps it pull easy. It actually glides right thru snow even when heavily loaded. The long rope helps for going down hills. Let the sled go in front and trail behind it with the long rope. If the hill is icy just hop on and have some fun. Watch out for the trees though.
I use a sled often in the winter to get into my camp. I am about a mile and a half off anything that resembles a road this time of year. When we get a little more of a base down then the snowmobile is the way to get in. This time of year, you have to walk and I will usually grab the snowshoes and the sled and drag my gear in. I can take enough to keep me and the dog very comfortable for a three day weekend with little effort with the sled. This is including 6 gallons of water.
If you have that much snow do you really have to tote that much water? Just askin'.
I dont have to but it is easier. I usually dont spend lots of time in the camp during daylight and it is more productive for me to carry water and use my days hiking,etc. I do melt snow in the evenings and do all my cleaning with that.Quote:
