Driftwood Scales

Yesterday, while hiking in one of my favorite spots, I decided to gather a few pieces of driftwood (Southern Cedar) to see how they would do for knife scales. I used the saw on my SAK to cut off a few pieces. I sliced them up today with a table saw. I'll let them sit for awhile before I use them, but anxious to see how they turn out.

Oh man those are gonna look sweeet! Is it still green or are they dried. I hope they keep that color dried up.

Not only will they be beautiful scales but they should last a long time. Just remember that it's a very soft wood to work with so you'll need to take your time.

I have just the piece of steel for you to try one of those scales on! Very nice looking stuff!

Not green, but they were in the surf. I go for walks at this place quite a bit and should be able to get some at low tide that have been out of the water for a long time. Hopefully the color will stay.

Looks good. They also look like they would make a good fire board.

Do a web search on how to make diamondwood before making scales from it. I've never done it personally; but diamondwqood can be make from almost any wood. If you've got a piece 16" x 6" x 6" I'd like to give it to a bowyer buddy of mine for a bow riser.

Diamondwood also makes for a great striker for turkey calls.I have a couple that I use with either a slate or copper surfaced "pot" and will not hit the woods with out them.

that really looks like it would be best done with wood of plain and uninteresting grain/figure.

as an example; their single color cocobolo is an obvious waste of a fine wood.

I blocked up a dead cedar years ago, at least 10 and haven't used it for anything. I am looking forward to seeing what you do with it. Guess I have a good seasoned pile but am at a loss as what to do with it.
