Rehandled an old knife

This older feller, my buddies dad asked if I could re handle and sharpen up his old knife. He has owned this knife for more than 20 yrs. The handles broke off years ago and had paper towel/electrical taped handles since then. I hope he likes the cocobolo scales I put on it for him. He wanted it in the original shape so I google the Ontario knife Co and this is as close as I got. I used three teak oil treatments then buffed with white rouge. The wood had this black part to it. I hadn't seen this before now.

I think your buddy's dad will be very proud of that knife once again.

I think it is. On the blade is stamped.

I saw the straight lines in the blade. The only maker that has that kind of design in the blade that I'm aware of is Old Hickory. They made/make some fine knives.

Good eye to catch the lines. My Old Hickory isn't quite as old, but....

More than 20 yrs of service this knife has given. That proof that they are fine knives.

And with your help probably another good 20 more. Very nice work as usual.

The cocobolo scales look great. Did you use Nickle silver pins? Looks great.

They are brass corby bolts. Thanks for the kind words guys.

Was the steel still in good shape behind the old handle? I have seen them very pitted before.

Yes it was very pitted, but had enough steel to provide for a strong handle. I sand blasted the rust off and the epoxy should provide a good water barrier to prevent further rusting under the handle.

Looks great! He wouldn't let you clean up the blade?

No he said thats how he likes his knives, with dark patinas. He also didn't want me to remove the chips in the blade which would make the blade thinner from edge to spine. He wanted nothing changed except for the new handles.

Knowing full well how it woul've looked if he let you.. I'd say he lost out or did he?...yeah... those notches in the blade might have some memories! Still looks great!

Nice work pancho. I gotta a thing for old hickory knives. The new ones are not as thick as the old school models. Always wanted to make a skinner with a 2.5 in. blade, 3.5 in. handle out of an old hickory butcher.
