Repairing a badly neglected knife

Well, I broke out the fixed blade I bought last spring and saw this:

Holy crap that's a lot of rust. It's gotta come off.

Any tips or tricks to get this rust off and bring the knife back to life?
I've read that wd40 and steel wool is a good combo for getting it off. Is this correct? Any input would be appreciated.

It doesn't look pitted - appears to be a little surface rust. Try 000 steel wool.

Well at least there is some carbon in the steel! It should wipe right off with coke yeah coca cola on a rag. It isn't pitted....

Sometimes you can get it off with just a cloth and some oil.

Try some WD40 and one of those green scrubbing cloths.

Well this was a lot easier than I thought it would be.
I went with what I had lying around which was a bottle of Coke and a Brillo pad. Let the thing soak in a cup of Coke and scrubbed at it for a good ten minutes with the Brillo. Came out better than before.

Gonna sharpen it tomorrow (stone's in the car) and pick up some mineral oil and I'll be good for hunting season.
