Those are interesting Doug. I'm curious as to how you determined your settings though.

The ISO is at 80 and stopped at F4 and 1/30 shutter.
It seem to work well for you, it just seems like an odd combination unless you're looking for a certain DOF.

Just playing around really. Taking lots of pics on various settings, not really good with it yet. Still learning. :)

It seems to be doing well. The Sony H20's a nice camera. If you use Photoshop, the easy way to get the effect your getting is to overexpose in the camera and then bring the exposure back in PS. That gives you a lot of options you can't get using the camera alone.

You sound very knowledgable. I feel dumb. I have photoshop but use maybe 2% of all the options. And the camera well as I said I'm learning not very good with it. :winkiss: Always up for tips, tricks and knowledge. :clap:

Thi was one I took at an Open Carry Dinner on Tuesday. The light was bad and I wanted to bring out the statue in the back. I way over exposed, brought back up in PS, added fill light and a glint on the torch.

Lots of thing to play with.

We have small groups of gun owner that do that all over Virginia, every month Ken.
Even though Va has shall issue Concealed Handgun Permits, it's legal to open carry without any kind of permit. We like to remind the public of that. Works too.

Doug, this is what the picture should have looked like if I hadn't used that technique. I could have used a strong flash but it would have caused problems with the closer subjects.

Oh another new camera newbie :-)
I reluctantly switched to digital this summer because I need my pictures in good digital resolution for work. Ended up with a Canon Powershot G10 because a DSLR with an assortment of different lenses would have been way too expensive.
Have had it for 2 months now but half the time, I need the bloody manual to take shots. I find all the fiddly buttons and wheels to twiddle with a real big annoyance; also not sold on Photoshop etc since I don't see the point in taking crappy pictures and then sitting in front of the computer and fiddling with them. *whine* Wish sorely I could have just stuck with my good old SLR :-((

Find you a Canon Powershot A570 IS. It's inexpensive and takes great pics. You won't get the close ups that Crash takes but all the pics I post are taken with it.

That one wouldn't work for me because I need at least 10-12 MPs for pictures to accompany magazine articles. Nice price tag on it though!

Guess I just have to spend more time with mine, get the gazillion of different functions in different settings of the different buttons into my head and become a better photographer, anyway. The camera can only do so much...it's up to the photographer to develop an eye for how to frame an interesting shot so I have to work on that, too.

I'm an old film person too...but I wouldn't trade my 40D for anything. Stuff is expensive but the cameras and lense have paid for themselves a hundred times over.

You just can't make film do some of the things digital will do.

I took this one at 9:30 at night, during a now storm. The pond wasn't a big as I wanted so I cloned it.

Trying to get the glow of a forge is really tough using film...it's a snap uing digital.

As far a Photoshop....I used to spend hours in the darkroom adjusting a picture, changing the exposure, develop, change F stop, develop, use my hand to lighten one area, develop....I can do the same thing in Photoshop in a few minutes
Even adjust shadow length like this one
