acid etched knife
Here is my test of an acid etched stainless? knife.

I used muriatic acid. The lighter areas are where the acid etched. For a mask I used clear nail polish. Tape didn't work at all. The acid got under the tape and etched everything. I was trying to achieve something like a camo-striped effect. Be careful, the acid will bubble and expand, possibly spilling over the side of the mask or the side of the knife.
Enjoy. Now we know muriatic acid works and what one mask could be. Acid commonly available in the paint dept.

I wonder if you could use glass etching cream for this as well? Since it is a cream, it might not seep so much and stay put where you want it. You can get it at most craft stores.
Safety note: Do not get this on your skin under any condition.
