ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Part of a training area at Fort Richardson is closed after a dog was apparently attacked by a wolf Sunday.
The dog was traveling with two joggers and two other dogs near or on Artillary Road, according to Bruce Bartley, a spokesperson for the Department of Fish and Game. The older dog was lagging when the joggers heard a yelp, Bartley said.
When they turned around, they saw a wolf trying to carry the dog away. They ran at the wolf, which dropped the uninjured dog.
But the wolf didn't leave, Bartley said. Instead, it followed them for a few miles, though it did not make another aggressive move.
For now, the Army is watching the wolf, and all training areas north of Artillary Road are closed to recreation.
An attack is unusual for this time of year, and the wolf does not appear to be a mother protecting her den, Bartley said, noting that a wolf attack occurred in the same area a few years ago.
Bartley said he thinks it may have been an unusual and isolated incident.
There are no plans to kill the wolf.
