However, I was wondering about peoples' insights into the importance of prevention to survival ...

When I taught wilderness remote first aid I shared the concept of 'anticipate and care' rather than 'react and cure' ... highlighting the importance of a prevention mindset ... so as to not have to use survivial techniques and do first aid ...

That's all most of us do. Prevent what we can, prepare for what we can't, and hope for the best possible outcome.

Maybe you could go to the introductions section and give us a short history. Where your from, age, experience level...

I have some good advice:
- Don't take a weed whacker to a 15 foot diameter patch of poison ivy while wearing shorts and a tshirt. Just don't.

Prevention must stem from education...if you're going out into the wilderness you need to have some idea of what things you may have to (hopefully you will) prevent. It's all part and parcel of preparation no?

A few....nah, more like opinions really.

The prevention mindset exists today. Talk to anyone that deals with disaster planning and/or business continuity. That's all they eat, sleep, breath and think about. It isn't a thing. It is...a mindset. It's learning to think about actions and consequences. Prevention and what can circumvent that prevention.

Everyone is selling something these days but here are a couple of sites that will help you understand the methodology.

DRII will be a little more restricted. The web page is mostly for its members. But still some info on board.

There is a strong parallel between individuals (anywhere) and business. You still have to perform a risk assessment and then attempt to mitigate the known risks. You also have to try and prepare a solution to unknown risks because you know they will happen, even if you don't know what they will be. For example. Several years ago a contractor punched a hole through an underground tunnel in the Chicago River flooding many businesses. No one could have planned for that contractor's actions but they could certainly have put a flood plan in place even if they thought the threat of flood was remote.

We do the same thing here every day. We look at what we know might happen in the bush so we take things like multiple ways to start fires, purify water, etc. We even plan to mitigate the risks we don't know are going to happen. For example, no one could anticipate a wildfire in the area you plan to spend a week in. However, you left information at home describing in detail where you were going, your route, and your return including times and equipment so rescuing you just became a whole lot easier.

It's a mindset. It's thinking about ALL the possibilities and then putting plans in place that cover ALL of them plus the things you didn't even think about.

Hi Crashdive 123 ... appreciate your comment ... and therefore a couple of things:

While I'm still relatively new to this forum ... is there a way to view the 46 threads you mention other than to go through them one at a time ... ?

I have been scanning the site looking for ideas ... and found a few here and there ...

The request is general I know - because I was hoping for any and all ideas ))smiles ... I did not want to limit responses at this time - then, I could explore ideas a little more as time goes by ...

And to all ... I will summarize the ideas into a post ... I'm most interested in this concept [even as a carry over concept into business >>> as an example I wrote a business article based on doing first aid] ...

Unfortunately there is not a great filter on the search function. Typing in prevention yeilds 46 threads that have the word prevention in it. You can also look at post instead of threads. The word you type in will be hilighted in red. Sometimes it can be rather tedious looking through the superfluous stuff though. (hey, you're a researcher so you may be used to that:)) One sub forum where we do talk about prevention quite a bit is General Emergency Preparedness - but then, most of that is not wilderness related. Many of the posts about kits, bug out bags, etc. deal with prevention as well. Hope this has been useful.

Additionally - we have had quite a few discussions on topics such as water treatment (preventing illness from waterborne stuff), food preparation and storage, proper canning techniques, gun safety, bear safety, etc. The list really does go on an on. Outside of the General Chat sub forum, much of what is discussed is about prevention - avoiding survival situations is the key!
