Hardening wood.

I know there's got to be info on thi somewhere on the forum, but I was wondering how you can harden a wood. LIke to make a throwing stick, or something like that. I thought it had to do with heating up the wood in coals or something like that. I was just kind of trying to figure it out the other day, so I put a wooden spice I carved into some fire coals until it got black, and burnt, and even had some embers on it. THen I figured "well when you want to harden steel you quench it in water" and seeing as I was in the middle of the woods and had no water, I just started to pee on it......I'm not sure if it worked or not, but it seems a lot harder now. So yeah obviously I need a little help on this subject.

Don't smell all that great does it? Get a seasoned piece of hickory, steam bend it and rub Super Glue in it. Let dry well and throw.

There's a joke there that I'm just going to stay away from.

To fire harden, don't put the wood directly in the coals. A little above, or a little below. As the wood starts to turn a nice medium to dark brown remove it and allow it to cool (you do not need to dip it in water)

Well I don't know what you were going to post but you sure don't want to RUB super glue on it. I suppose you could but it'd be a tad hard to throw.

Ok, thanks Crash that doesn't sound so hard. LIke Rick said Throwing a stick that's smothered on superglue is kind of an oxymoron haha.

BG - Think about it. What would happen to your hand if you rubbed super glue on the wood? It'd sort of be stuck to the wood. Hence, hard to throw. I think Pop was settin' up a joke that Crash...well....crashed.

To answer the question; Hold the wood over the heat. OK to scorch it but do not burn it. This takes out all of the moisture & tempers the peice. It is done- no quenching needed
