Hello from Northern Minnesota

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum, and I'm very excited to learn from you're large knowledge base. I've done quite a bit of hunting and fishing as well as camping in my life. I've done a few survival challenges. One in particular, where i was taken miles into the woods in the middle of the night, left alone, and forced to find my way back to camp using only the stars. It was a great thrill. I've also enjoyed the 2 or 3 times camping with nothing but a fishing pole (we have over 10,000 lakes in Minnesota) and a buck-knife. I'm here to learn. I hope you guys can help. Thanks

I think we'll be pretty excited about learning from your large knowledge base too. I tried that finding my way back to camp just by the stars once, I'm still out there wandering around somewhere...welcome to the forums.

Oh yeah, kind of like when my Dad used to drop me off on some God forsaken dirt road in northern Saskatchewan saying, "hey son, wanna play catch the truck?"

It doesn't include one of my favorites, "Inaminama (translation = "You know what I mean?")." The correct response is "minima (translation "I know what you mean.")."

Or, of course, if you don't know - you can just shrug.

And driving up there is a bit like driving in a different country with the road signs. I remember a sign for Pike River Flowage. I'd never heard the term flowage before but it just sounded nasty. And...they put signs on the bridges telling how much they weigh. Each bridge has a sign that says something like, "Bridge Weight, 9 tons". Who cares?

Flowage usually refers to a man made lake or pond which is the result of a dam. My mother was born on Dam Seven Flowage, one of a series of dams put in by the Schroeder Lumber Co in 1890 on the Cross River, and tributaries, to run logs down to Lake Superior.

As to the tonnage - it means the weight the bridge can hold. If your truck is ten tons - you may end up in the drink.

I had to look the "flowage" term up. It really was a new one on me. But it does sound like a body function. Yuuk!

As for the bridge weight....that was a joke. Apparently, not a very good one.
