Multiuse Water Purification and Navigation
(camera broke so forgive the lack of pictures)
Here's what I did:
Quote:
Constructed a pace counter with some steel ball bearings, drilled a hole through each center, and attached on a strip of rawhide. It's a bit heavy for my tastes but here's where I reasoned to keep it:

With a standard 1L plastic water bottle (kind you get at a gas station), I will fill it with stream water, make a small cook fire and untie my pace counter. Place the balls into the fire until they are hot, make tongs out of two pieces of wood and add the balls one at a time to the water bottle. To prevent them from sinking to the bottom and melting out, I swirl the water to keep them on the move. When one cools off and the water isn't boiling, I add another.
When the water is boiling I know it's purified. Once the water has been drunk or used, I invert the bottle and collect the balls. Voila
I suppose alternatively I could use a wire in place of rawhide than throw the whole counter into the fire. Then dip it in the bottle like a UV pen. :)
