I like to keep only what I need to depending on my needs for the days outings.I'm trying to locate or get ideas for a small/medium sized shoulder bag,I looked at some of the military surplus items such as messenger bags and such but figured I'd ask here for recommendations.Thanks,Rich
I have never liked one strap bags. They just aren't comfortable. Even if it doesn't have that much weight. A good pack with a GOOD waist belt will take the weight off the shoulders. You can take off one of the shoulder straps and it will still balance okay, if the hip belt is being used. The shoulder straps are for balance. You can even take off a shoulder strap and put an archer type strap across the chest and connected to the pack. A functioning hip belt with some sort of frame that transfers weight to the hips is the key.
A waist belt is another option. It generally comes with a shoulder strap, but is meant to be worn with the waist strap. I have one (not the one in the link) and it is pretty comfortable to wear, and my shoulder doesn't get any stress on it. The shoulder strap is mainly for balance.

Thanks for the reply and link,what I'm thinking of is something with the strap but worn like an archery back quiver ,strap across the chest.

Just another option to look at, and they can be DIY made.
I have a purse, yes, an "Old Navy" purse that I carry items in for those short afternoon strolls thru the woods.
I need to take a pic of it and the contents...
I modded a gas mask bag for short day trips. It was easy. I also cut the smaller strap off for a removable waist belt to secure it in one place.

A couple of years ago, Cheaper Than Dirt, Sportsman Guide and a couple of others had Finnish gas mask bags on sale for like 6 for $20 bucks....or some other real cheap prices.Quote:

Seems everyone in the many 'outdoor forums, bough a bunch of them......as I did.
Use them for ammo carriers, day bags, tool pouches .....and gave a bunch away.......You can afford to be a good guy for $3 bucks.
And are very handy and useful.......

Well decided on the Mountainsmith Tour Lumbar got a great deal on one and plus it can be used 3 separate ways,wiast[fanny pack style],over the shoulder or with the Strappette system to use more as a back pack,has plenty of storage for what I need to put in it plus some,I'd like to have gotten one in a different color but red/black will do.
I think you'll be well pleased with it. I've been pretty happy with mine. They also make a rain cover for it.

I've seen SOG shoulder packs at Walmart at around 30$. I've had a SOG 3 day pack and it worked ok. Not as well as the hype. But for the price it's within reason. But I would buy actual military packs if it were me. As former military I can confirm the military made products are way better than other brands that claim to be "military spec"

Just remember that military gear is generally made by the lowest bidder. But yeah, I hear ya.
saddlebags picked up at the tack shop can be modified into a decent shoulder bag. with saddle bags you get two for the price of one.
