New here, wish to learn!
Hello from New York, I'm in my first year of college and want to find my way in life. I am extremely fascinated with the concept of living "Off-Grid" and living a homestead type lifestyle. By this I mean gardening, farming, hunting etc to provide for myself without relaying too much on others. I wish to become independent and overcome my faults to become truly happy.
I really don't know too much about life at all as I am only 18 and live with mom and dad but wish to learn as much as I can in preparation for the future.
I would of course save up a hefty sum of money years before any dream could come to fruition, but how much I don't know. Its hard to discover how much money one needs when they are single and haven't had to pay for anything themselves their entire life.
In theory, after I have my own settlement I could make money by hunting/trapping for fur, selling handmade crafts, selling excess produce from farming/gardening (not that such a thing is likely), and from my interest in educating people about wild and exotic animals.
Particular things I want guidance on are
- What states or provinces (Canada) would fit the best for me and my primary interest of legally keeping exotic and wild animals?
- How can I find people to teach me life skills? I am a hands on learner and am too shy to try things if I fear I will do it wrong and need a good teacher by my side
- What is a good starting sum for saving money for ones future homestead? Its hard to think of the big picture and reality sitting here in my warm room.
- What states are tolerant of small scale fur-farming and the keeping of wild animals for educational purposes, as well as having large remote areas for settlement.
Also, I thrive off of criticism! I need it to improve on all things!

Welcome home. I thought that was a pretty good Introduction so I moved your thread to the Introduction section. How much time have you spent outdoors in the woods? What kind of outdoor skills do you have?
