Fiber Optic Connections in National Parks?

The issue of technology use in wilderness settings and natural environments has been raised before, so I will just mention an online article I saw yesterday. Slate magazine (November 14, 2014) has a short article by Filipa Ioannau "Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks Could Get Fiber Optic Connections". The article also asks whether the money that might be spent on this project could be better used on trail maintenance or other needs. :clover::clover: www.slate.com

I thought the thumping I heard just now was my wife reorganizing things, but apparently it was Edward Abbey spinning in his grave.

I think this is great for a lot of reasons not mentioned in the article. The ability to call of help is very limited within Yellowstone because of the spotty cell reception. Not just lost hikers but auto accidents and injuries around public attractions could be quickly reported. WIFI allows field biologists, forest managers and rangers improved communication and telemetry and video of some important landmarks can be greatly improved. The Saturday before we visited some dufus dropped a quadcopter in the Great Prismatic Spring. The internet camera caught a summer employee urinating in Old Faithful. The addition of fiber optic would open a lot of doors.

I understand how Edward Abbey might be upset about this idea; I have read some of his writings. I also understand that Edward Abbey, if he were to return as a seasonal ranger, might be assigned to maintain and clean the internet equipment at his ranger station. Abbey might also be assigned the task of performing the live fingerprint scans of visitors requesting camping permits. I wonder how Abbey would resolve this issue? I know that I have no easy solution. :clover::clover:
