I attract gun parts.

The H&R started out as a cheap fun truck gun project. Something to use for everyday wear in the Jeep or boat. All intentions were honest and good.

But I remembered I had an extra reflex sight in the junk drawer.

Then one of my buddies gifted me with an 870 barrel he no longer needed. Since it was free, and there was a modified choke tube in there and the riot gun barrel only shot 25% pattern it sounded like a good idea.

Then I remembered the old extended mag tube I had from an old build. Might as well put that to use too.

Hello, my name is Krat and I'm a parts junkie; but I can change, if I have too, I guess.

I was wondering how long it would take to get back to a longer barrel......short barrels are cool and all, but hunters know that having a coke and decent pattern is important as well.

Looking good now.....and after reading the pattern problem.....I went back to the old barrel in place of the breach-er barrel, on one of the "truck guns" a Mossberg, actually am carrying both now.

Another little fact to stow in your on board computer.

When you put the +5 extension on an 870 it is 10+1.

When you put it on the Pardner it is 11+1!

That thing holds nearly a half box of shells!

Forget the high capacity 9mm pistols, forget the 20 shot Glocks!

My little $150 wonder gun will throw 108 .38 caliber pellets downrange in one feeding!

But I must admit that I can not hide it under a slightly oversize, floppy, flowered Hawaiian shirt.

And don't anyone tell Joe Biden about it!

I never saw the point in em, myself. I either get by with just the ccw pistol, or it's shtf and time for the rifle. If it aint shtf, you probably won't have the longarm at hand. If it is shtf, you won't want the short range, lack of armor or car penetration of the 12 ga, the lack of a flashhider/silencer, the lack of a .22 conversion unit (rapidfire) the lack of concealability (when taken down) the lack of a chromed bore/chamber, the lack of luminous night sights, the lack of a dark, rustproof finish, the lack of lw, compact ammo, the lack of one armed use.

if shtf, the inabilty to hit birds on the wing means nothing. you dare not let things get so critical that the loss (or gain) of any one critter means jack squat. they are all territorial, they all stop moving sometime, and they all can be trapped, snared, netted, bird "limed" on their roosts, caught on hook/line, poisoned, or shot with the subsonic .22 unit and silencer. So why bother with the shotgun, hmm? you can have fun hunting with your ccw pistol or the.22 unit in the fighting rifle. Survival or defense aint about fun. If you're about fun, you aint serious about the other things, (obviously). However, I am.

You spent a lot of time hunting with the methods you mentioned?

Still, I must say if a shotgun ever called for any sight beyond a run of the mill bead, a reflex sight seems to fit the bill. How's the configuration treating you?

In the present non-apocalyptic world the reflex sight does very well. My sons have reported that they do very well in an apocalyptic world also. I sent at least one commercial reflex sight to Iraq in a "care package".

The sight I am using has a circle that can be matched to the most dense part of the pattern. and the "window" frames the shot cluster very well even if the power is low or off. If a problem arises it comes off in a few seconds and the bead is still there.

I have started favoring reflex sights and illuminated reticle scopes here in my latter years. It's mostly due to moving into a rural area and dealing with problems in low light conditions constantly.

When you have livestock and they are disturbed in the night you can not hide in a corner and ignore the problem and you are not doing a "house clearing" operation. You are walking out the door to face whatever wild critter is after your tame critters. Might be a coyote, might be a raccoon, could even be a small bear (though that is a stretch), might be the more likely presence of a possum or skunk.

On one occasion I flipped on the flood lights at 3am and had a coyote, two raccoons and a possum clustered around the hen house at the same instant. I have always wished I had a picture of that particular event.

Anyway, us rural dwellers have been grabbing smoothbores and running out to protect stuff in the dark for several hundred years and I find the reflex or illuminated sights a real bonus on any of my shotguns and not just this one.

Or as your Mama used to say, "If you ignore them they will go away."

Occasionally they do, but Mama didn't know about the internet.

I really envy you Americans....I wish I was born there or a citizen..I love guns and the wide open spaces..especially the country side....In Malaysia, getting a gun license is only limited to the rich.

Unfortunately time here are a comin' that the wide open spaces will be closed, and only the rich and privileged will be allowed guns of any sort.

The shotgun will prolly beat that sight to death.

I thought we werent supposed to talk about shtf ? This isnt a survivalist forum, yknow ;)

But for NON apocalyptic use, just be sure to get a perfect cheek weld each time or the parrallax will throw your shot.

That particular sight has done fine on several guns with more recoil than this big heavy outfit. The thing weighs what seems like 15 pounds fully stoked.

And reflex sights eliminate parallax from the sighting equation. That is why they are used on individual arms, crew served weapons, tanks and jet fighters.

As for SHTF, that is different from TEOTWAWKI. One can easily find themselves in a temporary situation that requires more than the standard capacity of a magazine without the end of the world befalling them, be that a noise in the darkness, guarding the homestead after a tornado flattens the neighborhood, attack by a heard of lemmings or a three gun match at the local shooting club.
