Smaller Caliber Carbine?

I'm looking to purchase a smaller caliber carbine with enough power to take down a deer. It has to be light weight and be loaded with a clip. Semi-automatic firing is preferred, but not required. This rifle will be used by a full grown, smaller person (about 4'11 and weighing about 98 pounds). We spend a lot of time in the North Carolina woods and wilderness, and sometimes the occasional swamp.

The reason we are looking for one is because it will be used for a two week hunting expedition that will involve a lot of hiking and camping.

What's your suggestions?

Small Caliber ? rifle or pistol caliber? and by clip do you mean a stripper type clip to load a magazine or by clip do you mean the magazine?

Obviously a newbe Welderguy, and you just swamped him.

If he knew what he wanted and the exact proper terminology he would not be here asking us, he would have already bought it!

Didn't even say what would be the quarry hunted and NC has everything from rabbits to boar, bear and elk.

This is the standard AR/Mini 14/M1carbine or .357 lever-gun with possible AK/SKS overtures thread in different form.

But we must remember that this carbine will be used by some "elf like creature" with very little weight to anchor the recoil.

This could take some time, is my popcorn ready yet???

External magazine. Dang it, did it again. Sorry, I was taught to shoot by a guy that thought he knew everything, but knew nothing, and out of habit I still screw up the terminology (his name is my father, and he's perverted a lot of my lingo. He still believes that hot water freezes faster then cold water). I know that until I started writing/talking. I anger a lot of people.

It's for deer or smaller game.

Either pistol or rifle, just not something that's going to recoil to an extent that knocks over my "elf like creature" friend. I would however believe that it would be funny to see.

Ruger .44 Carbine comes to mind, as its an auto loader and a .44 in a rifle cuts down the felt recoil..........but under 100 yds has plenty of power.

DW shoots one, and DD used to till she moved up to a .270.

The other option would be a Lever gun like Henry or Rossi in .357, .44 or .45 Lc.

If a magazine is a requirement, I would suggest you look at the Ruger Mini-13 in .223/5.56 or the Mini-30 in 7.62x39 or something in 6.8 SPC. With the proper ammunition, the .223 makes a satisfactory deer round. The 7.62x39 is very similar to the 30-30, long the standard deer cartridge in the United States. The 6.8 SPC it is readily available in AR format. The Mini-13 has the least recoil and a rather short stock, which may fit your elfin friend better..

Well, I looked all morning, and it was an effort, but I finally found a subject among the local population of second and third generation Germans and Poles that was 4'11" and weighed close to 98 pounds.

Only one, and I had to go to the Chinese "all you can eat" buffet to find her.

I am going to cast a vote for something I never prefer, but is ideal for this requirement.

I am voting for an M4 carbine in .223 or .300 Blackout with the collapsible stock.

Lightweight, low recoil, adequate power for the game and no need for sawing chunks of stock off or wishing they were back on when the next shooter picks the rifle up. Prices have almost returned to a normal level and the ammo is available for a multitude of applications.

Acceptable as a "woods gun"???

You may want to check your hunting regs. Rifles are prohibited in some counties in NC. That would restrict you to shotgun and/or handgun.

Sometimes the best "woods rifle" is a shotgun!

6 1/2 pounds, 39" long, low recoil, threaded for choke tubes, sized for pixies and fit for any bird or beast in North Carolina.

I have to agree. I mean, I really have to. Rifles are forbidden for hunting state wide around here. You could poke somebody's eye with one of those things.

I had a real zinger post on people living in shotgun only states giving advice on "woods rifles", but not wanting to incur wrath more than the normal amount I deleted it.

I have CQB rifles and long range rifles and designated marksman rifles, "deer rifles" and "woods rifles" but what sits by the back door for day to day use is a shotgun.

Oh well, that's a whole other thread.

The only way we can carry a woods rifle is to have it unloaded and cased or carry a .22. Thank goodness it's all about shot placement.

CCW on a shall issue basis and open carry has been legal since 1792.

Just check to verify the minimum caliber allowed in your state for deer hunting before buying a small bore assult rifle. A lot of states do not allow deer to be hunted with a .223 caliber weapon.

That Hi-point carbine will weigh almost as much as the Pixie carrying it!

10% or more of body weight is a bit much when discussing the NC hill country.

OP stated "enough power to take down a deer"....9mm and .40 S&W maybe not the best choice as a hunting weapon....also need to be aware of state laws as to what calibers are legal.

In my opinion, the best low recoil rifle would be a .243. No it doesn't have a 30 round magazine, but it is perfectly capable of dropping any deer, they are accurate, and low on recoil. Also legal in all states for deer hunting.
