How did it work out? A lid may help some.
here's my trap boiler, not 55 gallons but I bet it would biol 55 gallons though.

Thanks, Randy...It boiled just took a while and a lot of wood to fuel it. It's still runnin', I pulled them out and tried strippin' the bark, while it was softened, it didn't seam to help. I think it may be that they will have to dry to get the the bark off. I don't know, it is my first time trying, but everything I read said it is how it is done.
I have used a pressure washer to peel logs. Maybe that would work.

Wrap the drum with a sheet of metal with an air space between the two. This will prevent all the heat from just going up in the air and not serving a purpose. This will channel the heat all alone the sides . Now instead of heating just the bottom you are also heating the sides.
Although it didn't boil, once I made, well helped make, about 45-50 gallons of Brunswick Stew in a 55 gal drum out in the Korean boonies. Man, was it good and it didn't last long.
So, technically, wouldn't that be Korean stew? I won't ask what the meat was.

Yep, they can be very dangerous.
put that thing over a dakota fire-hole, or a rocket stove.. or just put an old piece of tin around the fire to concentrate the heat. We got rid of a few HUGE stumps that way, and I guarantee it would have boiled a 55 gal drum of water. Any sort of forced air furnace will also help, however and whatever you fashion it from.
