Still looking for the methods for a "Pork barrel"....as used in the past wagon trains and homesteads.....NOT the political Pork barrel.

What I was referring to was the practice of packing pork in barrels using lard as the packing, and you could add eggs into the mix.....so a breakfast could be made by taking out your bacon and eggs from the barrel....and enough grease to cook them in.
Story goes a lady carried her food in barrels to the west coast and started a restaurant, cooking for the 49-ers and became wealthy.....still looking for that reference.
I actually know this one!! It's called meat potting or potted meat. See if this is what you are looking for. Don't know about the egg part though.

Yeah, that's what I was looking for...I can remember my Grandmother doing it....and eating the bacon.
The egg part came from a passage in a book.....can't remember which one....and I was beginning to think it was just made up, for the story.

No problem. I remembered it from when I was a kid too. I had an aunt that potted meat. Mom was never too keen on me eating any of it but I'm still here so I guess it works okay. My aunt used a crock if I remember correctly. I remember the first time I ever say a can of potted meat in the store. I asked mom is Aunt Helen was selling it. That's the only place I'd ever heard about potted meat until the store episode.
