Don't drink the Kool-Aid...

About a year ago I started hanging out with a neighbor, kind of hippy like. Went to a lot of psychedelic music festivals, met lots of new interesting people. Thought they were all great, ya know, self betterment, LSD to explore your mind and fix problems, caring about the earth, so on and so forth.

Over the past few months i've started to realize, hmm, these guys are starting to get a liiiitle too far out there for me. Not all of them, but a few, including my neighbor. Speaking in cryptic riddles, like they know something you don't, some sort of profound knowledge. Coming up with wild fantasys and theories. Theories I liked, because I thought that were were just theorizing. The more time went on the more they started believing it 100% and anyone that even questions it was a fool. Examples are your normal conspiracies, 9/11, chemtrails, fluoridated water, GMO mind control foods.

Well, I stopped going to these parties and hanging out with most of them but my neighbor, who was a friend first. He's been acting stranger and stranger. Few weeks ago broke up with his girlfriend of 7 years, started going to SF doing odd random things like a pottery class, bought a brand new car after 2 months ago buying a truck and dumping all his money into it, saying how much he NEEDS a truck for everything he does, and how much cars are stupid and he could never get one, how awesome the truck is now that he got it right.

Well last night after having a bit too much of the weirdness through texts, calls and that stuff I told him to come over and talk to me like a friend not a mystical wizard. To which he replied, but you know that's what I am. O...kaaaay....

He explained all this crazy **** about new awesome friends, smoking DMT, and how after smoking some DMT the voices didn't go away for a week, and god was talking to him, and told him to break up with her, buy the new car, and that the world is about to break into something crazy and new, how he is healing society one soul at a time. I've heard him talk about god/aliens before but he was saying some **** about them returning soon and taking us up. So I finally just bugged him to come out with it where is he reading/hearing all this **** as nicely as I could. Well, he finally spilled the beans and pulled up this site for me...

Jesus Christ i'm worried about him. Is he going to drink the Kool-Aid and ascend to Haileys comet or whatever. Is he goign to start/join "The Family" and do something in a Manson fashion? What scares me is some of the **** he explains kind of makes sense.


I know a lot of people here are older and probably experienced the hippy generation. Is this the same **** different pile, same ideas conspiracy theories from them? Were people like this back then too? Should I be concerned or just laugh and ignore him? Thought, opinions and any responses would be great.

Also curious what conspiracy theories you believe in and to what extent.....

Well, most survived, some didn't, some never grew up.......most woke up one day to find a wife, job, house kids, bills.......Hard to say.

Mostly you can't change an altered mind........be a friend, but watch your self.

This isn't that generation though. He's early thirties and there are all ages in the group. I'm mainly curious if this is pretty much the same **** as that generation, and if the psychedelics some how make people all go in te same direction as far as mentality and ideas.

I would be highly skeptical of his new found "enlightenment". Ancient religions and cults, have had a long history of false claims and prophecies. It is a dangerous path which usually ends in disaster for many innocent victims. He could be right, but the odds against it are pretty compelling. Express your concerns as a friend and then step aside so he can choose his own destiny.

Most illicit drugs make people paranoid, some more than others. And if the person has any underlying mental issues then its magnified ten fold. My ex father in law is a prime example, he truly believes that gargoyles are real, and aliens are among us.

When you look at the big picture, things really don't change too much....certain people search,....some lead, ...some follow....some wait for the mother ship?????

Think for yourself, and follow you own path.

I grew up in the '60's and '70's. Some folks that dropped acid were never the same again. Not necessarily bad, just different than before. But, in retrospect, the same thing could be said about alcohol. I would venture to say that alcohol has ruined far more lives than hallucinogens ever did. I know what you mean about the "cosmic" talk. I never could get used to that.

There's a problem with many of these fringe religions. An unscrupulous individual can create a whole bunch of garbage around a little bit of fact to attract a following. I guess the drugs often times play a big role in the charade. Three words....follow the money! That will usually uncover the fraud that is being perpetrated. For example: If he just dropped a lot of cash on a truck, did he pay fair market? Was it a "deal" from someone inside this group? A lot of cults want to separate you from your support group before they strip you of your assets.

Hey, drugs, you gotta love 'em. Hang on I gotta call......................I'm back. Short chat with God. You're friend has problems. Satan sent me a text on that while I was on the phone.

For whatever it's worth, probably 90% of the cases my office handles, be they criminal matters (the majority of cases by far) divorce or domestic disputes, accident/liability claims, custody and guardianships, business disputes, evictions, and whatever else, are entirely or largely due to recreational drug (not marijuana) use and/or alcohol abuse.

We all have enough problems in life without adding intentional degradation of our judgment and ability to function to the mix.

I know he's your friend, but I'd recommend you cut and run...

I've had a different story, but I had to cut this person out of my life. He was obsessed with this girl. He was wimpy, had no self-confidence, no charism and wanted girls to like him for "who he is". Now, ok, plenty of guys are like this. But after a while, his whininess became very creepy. After reading about that guy in TX (I believe TX) that shot up a yoga place because he hasn't gotten laid in something like 20 years, this guy transcended creepy and became scary. Honestly, it was as if he was constantly trying to sabotage himself in life. My friends and I slowly came to the conclusion that he would no longer be invited and was mocked any time his name was mentioned.

Look, I know you're scared for your friend, but think about yourself first (and your safety and the safety of those around) if he's that into this conspiracy nonsense (and we're not just talking about how the government is in bed with major corporations, that I can understand).

A lot of goo opinions. Rick that's how I feel and honestly the answer I want. The less scary and simple answer. I do wonder about them though. Psychedelics have been used for thousands of years and I've personally seen them solve many serious issues like addiction and psyche problems. I wonder what if any positive effects they harbor and how they would.
Yves briefly mentioned other theories. Do we have conspiracy theory thread. I'd like to know what ones you guys think have truth to them however little it may be
