Convex Grinds

I am making several knives using a convex grind. I haven't had alot of experience using a convex grind. I am rather fascinated at the ease of sharpening one. What if any mass produced knives are convex grind? I find it odd I have never owned a factory convex grind...

Opinal, Falkniven, I think a lot of Bark River knives are.

The only factory convex knife I own, or rather owned as it has rusted and the handle is rotten, has been the Opinel. They look to be a full convex grind from the spine to the edge. My other knives with a convex grind are either custom or put on there after I received them.

Forgot another one... Condor Knife and Tool

I have their golok and many of their blades have a slight convex edge. Their edge can use some work. They're polished edges, but are too thick and need to be reground atleast another 1/8 - 1/4 inch.

I see I am not the only one that likes them. What is your experience sharpening a convex grind?

Most knives I make are convex. I strop them sharp. First on sandpaper and then suede with buffing compound. I never let them get dull enough to really need much sandpaper. Most of my non convex are now convex because I strop them.

I personally have trouble sharpening a convex edge. I have tried using sandpaper on a mouse pad and phonebook to give it that slight bend. I can see it working, but have the trouble of getting that razors edge since everywhere I look (when I think about it) doesn't have a fine enough grade of sandpaper. I've looked at Walmart and the local hardware and auto stores when I go in them but just can't find it. And I can't think of the last time I went to a place like Lowe's and I won't make an hours worth of a special trip for sandpaper. But the edges seem to hold up well. My girlfriend's family works in construction and I've been meaning to get some from them. For sharpening sakes, I like the scandi grind.

My local Ace hardware has 800 grit and even crocus cloth, the local Autozone keeps 1200 grit. How fine are you wanting?

If they do not have what you want check with an auto paint supplier. Almost every town has someone that supplies local auto body shops. They can not do their job without it.

I've been wanting 400, 800, 1200, 1600, 2000 atleast. I was thinking my girlfriend's father gets it up to 6000 for work so I was going to try and get it from them.

My daughter and Sil run a body shop and I can get most any grit of paper I want from them. As KY says check with a body shop supply. I doubt they wouldn't have anything you want as far as grits.
