I guess I will come clean...

I am shooting a compound bow. Now, I'm still building selfbows, currently working on a rawhide backed hickory and putting the finishing touches on the osage sinew back recurve. It's just that I made a trade awhile back for a Bowtech Blackhawk and really enjoy the techy side.

My 8 year old son got me into the wheels as he prefers his compound to his hickory recurve. So I figured I will venture to the OTHER SIDE for awhile.

I just enjoy archery and shooting bows. All bows.

There is way more power in a compound bow,,, yes ?

all the bows i have i made with a hatchet a knife or are fred bear recurve

I have a laminated recurve and the longbow I made.. Though I have shot few other bows too. Never a compound.

I think that if you have a 60lb wheely bow, recurve, and longbow with everything being the same except for the bow, they will do basically the same. Now the wheely bow will get the arrow there faster than the recurve which will get it there faster than the longbow, but as long as it gets there the job is done.

We can talk kinetic energy, but I don't want to. There are alot of opinions, many are valid. But the most important thing is to put the arrow in the kill zone.

I think one of the best things is to always keep an open mind. Let us know how you do with the sling bow on fish.

I've never shot a regular bow, but I have shot a compound. Compound bows will be able to provide more power in a smaller bow with less draw. Also, the way its designed, at full draw, you aren't holding the firing weight, but something less. You can actually feel it in the draw where it reaches a heavy point then pulls back a little bit more easier.

I'm not sure what the difference would be between a compound bow and a recurve bow of the same draw weight though. If they both put the same energy into the arrow, then the arrow will fly at the same rate for both bows.

I've gone from homemade long bow to, recurve to, compound to, a bear recurve. My next step is my homemade long bow. I found some hickory. Funny how this is going in a cycle.

It's only natural to go forward, go backwards, then go forward again. It's just fun.

We're currently teaching my son with a compound bow...but with the way things are changing, we're thinking that when he's ready to move up...that instead of a bigger one we get him a crossbow instead. I know in PA...they are pushing the crossbow for hunting because it's a cleaner kill and less likelihood of maiming.

An arrow or a bolt with a broadhead is basically the same as long as you hit in the kill zone.

My son wants one, we will see when he gets much older as it's too much like a rifle.

I started shooting back when I was about 9 or 10 with a little lemon wood stick bow.(around25 lb pull) Then when I was about 12 I had a teacher that had an after school archery club. He helped me build a 40 lb laminated longbow. Had that bow till a few years ago when I loaned it to a young family member. ( shattered it stringing it up) Bought a Bear recurve back in the 60's. (still have it and shoot it now and then) I admit that I did try a turn with the wheels and cables but after just a few months I lost interest and bought a laminated longbow from a friend which I shoot to this day. So as has been said already, I have made the circle. Btw Archery is archery no matter what you are shooting. I do however have some trouble putting a crossbow in archery catagory. As Fvr said, it's just to much like a rifle. IMHO.

I had a Bear compound in my youth. I didn't like the feeling of it - it felt flimsy beyond the let-off, the string angle was a bit extreme and the string alignment felt too easy to wander - but I don't believe that any of this effected the performance if the release was good. For me it's a combination of personal preference and a good natured tendency toward training wheel jokes.

I predominately shoot trad bows because I can make them myself. In my circumstances that works out to be the biggest factor. What I liked most about my compound was that if I could draw it readily, I could shoot it. As a young teen, this let me shoot a 55lb draw, which I could not have done by a bow that stacked. No special feat, but it was certainly fun.

As hunters we get hung up on what a person is shooting, what brand, etc. Personally, I don't care if a guy is afield with a crossbow. The main thing is that he is out there.
