Boots in the Field Journal – Volume 5
If you’ve been following my journal, you know we’ve been having some uncharacteristically nice weather in Montana this Fall. As, I mentioned yesterday a front was moving in…well it showed up today!

We ran 2 teams of dogs today- a total of 20 miles for about 7 hours of work out in the rain, mud, sleet, snow and wind. I think, thus far my journal might have painted a prettier picture than my life really is…these pics might put it in a little more realistic perspective.

This is enough dog food to last until Dec 3rd…

We walk the kennel with 5 gallon buckets of food and give every dog approx 4 cups of food

We water every dog three times a day…it takes (6) 5 gallon buckets of water to fill up all the dog bowls in the kennel

Well done Jason. Your journals and pictures haven't done anything other than allow us to have a glimpse of your area and some of what it takes in dealing with that many dogs. Having a job that you enjoy (at least it sure looks that way) make you a wealthy man. The landscape that you have shown us is beautiful. The picture you have painted is that of a friend sharing his life with ohter friends.

Thanks for the look. Question for you. I notice you wear a white parka. Is that something you would normally wear when you are out running dogs or with clients? The reason I ask is the need to be spotted should something happen. I do like that parka, by the way, who makes it?

The white parka...
yes, I do wear it in the backcountry. It isn't insulated- so its just a shell (a heavy weight shell) I usually have on brighter colored underlayers that I could be seen in from above if I just peeled this off. If you look- alot of the dogs have "hunter orange" harnesses...also we have brighter colored sled bags too...so although I can conceal myself pretty well in the snow-I can also make myself seen if need-be...
I like to wear this garment because its a traditional anorak design- it has a coyote ruff (taken off yesterday) and is incredible at cutting the wind. Its made out of sail-cloth canvas and is superior to any modern fabric I've tried for windy conditions. The area where I live is considered one of the windiest place in the USA- we often have steady winds of 30-40 mph and gusts over 60mph...after being outside in winds like that everyday for a few years- you start looking for a real wind proof jacket. Its hand-made by my friend Kevin Kinney of "Empire Canvas Works" he made an incredible custom snowsuit for my son last year that is unreal. He has a real good website google him...

Now, the real question is why wear a white anorak in the MUD? lol...funny, this pic was taken towards the end of the day after we had run the both teams. After the first run i was soaked and very cold...if you look I am actually wearing a Marmot rain shell under the anorak- you can see the hood pulled up! But, i was so muddy I didnt feel like going in the house. The perfectly clean anorak was the only coat hanging in the garage- so i pulled off the ruff, and put it on over what I was wearing- needless to say I didnt get cold again....today the anorak is in the wash....

I was going to say, the anorak looked like an ECW from Kevin. Personally, I have never met him. But, from what I see on the web on different forums, he is a stand up guy. On BCUSA he has a tutorial on how he sews his mitts and another on how he sews his wool jacket. I don't know too many manufacturers that will give a tutorial on how to make their gear. He also has classes at his shop so you can make it yourself with his equipment. I have his website bookmarked.
