For the job I just got they required a full physical. They diagnosed me with diabetes. They don't know yet if it's type II or full blown, just late onset as I have never had any symptoms and have never tested positive for it in my yearly check ups.
A new challenge to persevere and carry on with.
The good news (I guess) is they found it and now it can be treated. Did they say what your sugar count was? Hopefully, it will be low enough to control with meds rather than insulin. Hang in there. The only place to go from the bottom is up. The new job is surely a step in that direction.
Sorry to hear that HA but there's a lot you can do about it starting now. If I remember correctly you might benefit from some sort of a regimen Crash is on. Loosing a few pounds each week won't significantly cramp your style but it could save your hide and get this diabetes thing under control.
Besides, where else are you gonna get this caliber of cheerleaders rooting for you along the way? I know I will!
All you gotta do is decide than now is as good a time as any to make that first step. At least you've got a good excuse.
I've had enough wrong blood tests where if you've never had symptoms or previous history, I'd ask them to do it again...just sayin.

It was from the results of more than one test, I had sugar in my urine. My glycohemoglobim A/C 1 test came back 11.1 which is VERY high. I think part of the problem is I "self-medicated" my blues with comfort foods and sweets and sometimes a few beers in the last 60 days. Drank alcohol more in the last two months than I had in the last 2 years. So I have been doing some online research and I think I am going to try correcting it first with diet (the Paleo Diet) and exercise. They have a wellness center at the hospital I now work at and I will increase my exercise level week by week. I'll test my blood sugar as directed and get things turned around.
Your on the right track HA. Diet and excercise and watch your blood sugar numbers. Hang in there buddy!!
well hopefully once you settle down into a routine you will be able to get out for a walk and snack on some almonds.

The thing about most people (including myself) is that they usually need a wake-up call to start doing the right thing. If you're lucky enough, and you are AS (regardless of what you think right now), that wake-up call came early enough where you can still make it to your destination intact. You'll be huffing and puffing, but you're gonna make it.
All you gotta do is wake up and get moving.:)
An Hgb A1C of 11 represents an average blood sugar in the low 300s over the last 3 months.
It may take diet, exercise and several medications to get an A1C that high back to normal but tight control could mean a complication-free life. You can do it.
Yup! I'll be rootin' for you. The support I've had from this bunch of misguided ne'er do wells when I was giving up smoking, kept me going and I've been smoke free a few months now. Diabetes isn't the end of the world. It just takes some managemant and a few alterations to your lifestyle.
HA,I don't think you could be getting a job in a better place than where you are with a diabetes diagnosis,since I am pretty positive that they have diabetic diets for their patients,and you can emulate those yourself,and with your history as a chef,I am sure that you can make those foods even more palatable!

HA....A friend of mine was in the same diabetic boat as you. He had a whatchacallit # of 11.something. He started checking his blood sugar many, many times a day. He not only checked it after eating normal meals, he also checked it after eating specific items, and learned that he had three things that he wouldd normally eat, that made his blood sugar go through the roof. He did as his doctor directed him to do, but by staying away from just those three things, he and his doctor keep his diabities in check with just a small amount of medication.
If I remember correctly, he told me that not eating those three things, and walking three times a week, took care of just over 2/3's of his problem!

I can't remember all three things, but one of the three was ketchup.......Go figure! LOL
I can believe Ketchup was one because the first or second ingredient meaning it's about 50% of the substance is High Fructose corn syrup.
Stress does it as well.
Did you also have high blood pressure?
I found out a couple years ago that I was borderline diabetic.
With diet and exercise I was able to score a 6.5 on my A1C.
For me,hotdogs will send me up pretty high.The challenge is to stay with it once you get this under control,and you will.I need to get back to controling it and stop messing around.
My blood pressure is what they call "borderline high" where they used to call normal. I was a little stressed the day of the physical and it was a few points higher than usual. It's usually between 135/60 and 140/70. One of my goals with exercise/diet is to get it to 125/50. I have a resting heart rate of 70 and I want to get that to 60 or less.
