Backpacking Trip Report
I guess this is the best section for a trip report. Here is a quick trip I did with the Boy Scouts and my almost 8 yr old son. We went on an overnight BPing trip up in the Uintas. We parked at the parked lot right next to Bald Mountain. If you drive on Mirror Lake Highway, it is the highest point on the road, just south of Mirror Lake. We then hiked 2 miles west to Notch Lake were we spent the night. The next day we hiked back to the cars, and the summited Bald Mountain which sits at 11900 ft at the top.
Here is a picture of Clegg Lake on the way to Notch Lake. It is almost dusk, so the light is a little poor.

This is the tiny pond just south of Clegg Lake.

Here I am looking east at Bald Mountain with Clegg Lake providing a reflection.

Here is Notch Lake with a view of Notch Mountain in the background. I am looking west, and the sun is behind the mountain, so it is a little dark. Can you guess why they call it Notch Mountain? Also, our campsite was between Notch Mountain and Notch Lake.

Here is the morning view from our campsite looking east at Bald Mountain with Notch Lake in the foreground.

Here is our campsite in the morning. The sun is hitting Notch Mountain, but hasn't hit our campsite yet. You can still see the frost on everything.

One of the scouts left his pack out, and it shows how everything was frosted.

Here is my tent frosted over. Let's just say it got cold overnight. I am guessing it was in the 20's. My homemade quilt worked amazingly well, and kept me warm, so I am confident now that it is a 20F quilt.

Here are a few more pictures before we headed out.

Here we are trying to summit after leaving our packs at the car.

And here is me and my son at the summit. My camera decided to stop working half way up the summit, so I didn't get as many pictures as I wanted. This one is with my phone.

It was a great trip and the boys had a lot of fun. The pack I made for my son worked well, although he didn't like carrying it that much. He did great the first day, but not that great the second day. Once I took off the pack, he hiked like a maniac with his short legs. I was very proud of his determination to summit.

That's what it's all about. No greater reward than seeing his smile.

Hopefully he likes doing this when he hits teenagerness. I am planning on a few epic trips (2 weeks+) and want to take him as a hiking companion.

Looks like a great time, your son is lucky to have a father that will take this time to hike with him! and you are lucky that your son and you share your interrest! And you are both lucky that you have such an amazing nature, for me, it is something that i might only get to see once a year.

Absolutely priceless!!! I just wish my Father's health would have lasted long enough for us to do stuff like that. Not to say we did not, but it was quite limited. You go - SUPER-DAD!!!!!!!
