Pacific Tragedy: U.S.S. Indianapolis

Succumbing to Japanese torpedoes, the Indianapolis sank, taking 400 men down with her. For four days, Captain McVay and 800 survivors drifted in the Pacific, facing death from dehydration, sunstroke, hypothermia.

Living as close to Indy as we do the story of the U.S.S. Indianapolis is in the news quite often here. Captain McVay was found guilty at court martial for not zig zagging despite testimony from the Japanese captain that it would have done no good. He would still have had a clean shot. It didn't matter than he was denied an escort even though the Indianapolis was not equipped with sonar and it didn't matter that the Navy did not launch a search until the ship had gone missing for 5 days.

In the end, Capt. McVay took his own life. He shot himself on his back porch and was found with a toy sailor clasped in his hand.

Captain Charles McVay was exonerated and his record cleared by presidential order in 2000; 32 years after his death.

RIP Captain. You've earned your rest.
