What is this ?.......

I looked thru all my garden books and couldn't ID it so before I proceed to remove them from my yard I want to make sure there not a useful plant that I should keep around.

Looks like Thistle to me? But there are no thorns along the stem,what does the base look like?

I don't think that's thistle. I ran into that last year and like to never have figured it out. Of course, I've forgotten the name of it. Let me see if I wrote it down somewhere.

The stem appears to be smooth in the picture. No thistles. Look and see if the leaves have thistles. I can't find it...again...but I'll keep looking. Seems like it was an herb but I'm not sure.

Could it be milk thistle????

Not really sure BUT it kinda looks like what the old timers called "stinging nettle" But as I said not sure, Pretty sure it's NOT milk thistle. It's usually an off white color.

I think I found it, it might be Cirsium texanum ,Texas Thistle , Sunflower Family - Asteraceae http://pages.prodigy.net/jospencer/texthistle.htm.

Oh well dang it, I kept looking and it also looks like musk thistle.

Look up Centaurea biebersteinii. Spotted knapweed. It's the only spineless thistle-like plant I can find in my big book of plants, BUT my book indicates it doesn't grow this far south.
When you have time, here's a good place to look at pictures of plants. Most don't have good descriptions so pay close attention to the pictures and the plants.

It dawned on me late last night that Nell actually identified the plant for me last year. I'm still looking.

Okay. I have to back off. I found my post and it was purple prairie clover, which is obviously NOT what you have. Can you post some pics of the leaves on it and maybe a close of up of the lower flower head. There are scads of different kinds of thistles. Perhaps it's one of the lesser ones.

I planed on getting some better and more pics today and cant locate my camera, Ill take a couple with my phone tommorow and post them.
