A Burning Question

Well, not really a question. I’ve had this project on my list of things to try for quite some time. The wood is oak and has been seasoned for about 3 years. Even with that, the crack in it grew. I’m pretty confident that it can be sealed with some pine resin. Here’s the progress so far.

I used small fires to burn into the bowl. After one burned down I used a piece of copper tubing to get as much out of the embers as I could. Then I’d gouge out the charred wood, and start again. As it sits now, it is about two inches deep. This size would probably work well for grinding (mortar/pestle). I plan on thinning the walls (widening the bowl) and making it a little deeper.

Please forgive a stupid newbie question but...
why not just chisel out the core to the wall thickness
you desire and fine-tune from there?

That's another method that would work. I'm using the curved chisel that's in the picture, but now mallad. You could actually use a sturdy stick or a rock with an edge to remove the charred material. If you "had" go make one and didn't have tools, burning would probably be easiest.

Another on the "to do" list is using a hatchet and making a wash basin sized bowl.

How do you control the fire and the amt. of "charrness".
If you go too far can is the game over?

This is my first attempt at a bowl. I'm using very small fires, letting them burn down to a coal and then use the tubing to burn a little deeper. It does not brun very deep. As I get closer to where I want it the plan is to just use a hot coal (form a nearby fire) so that I can be more precise. And yes, if you go to far all you can do is enjoy the campfire (or maybe make a spoon).

OK, picture your self in the bush, needing a fine bowl, and what the heck, didn't think to bring your chisels and gouges with you.(Bowl making not of the top of the things to do first list)

Now you do have fire, knife, sharp rock or what ever, so you just go for it, the primitive way.

Whole canoes were basically made this way, as well as bowls and cups.

would a coconut shell make a good bowl ? or would it crack ?
