Does anyone know what the difference between making a survival water filter and lye soap is?

Survival water filter <using fine sediment, charcoal, and other filtering layers> to filter water for drinking.

Making lye soap, pouring water through charcoal to get a redish-brown liquid to add to boiling rendered animal fat.

It seams by using charcoal for a survival water filter, you are going to drink the lye and this would do more harm than good.

You don't make lye passing water through charcoal. you make it passing water through ashes. Another name for lye is potash.

Sorry to revive a 'dead' thread. My own trials and errors during the leeching process (and lack of information on the Internet) made my experience with potash lye quite interesting none the less, and thus I could not resist. :)

CORRECT! Actually, you are all are. lol Potassium Hydroxide (aka Potash, lye) can be leeched from hardwood ash, dried kelp, banana leaves, and other sources using soft water. The most important thing to note that potash is extracted from the white ash. In my experience too much char will absorb/filter it, thus too little char will produce the desired amber potash. (Keep in mind the softer the water, the more that will be leeched from the ash as well.)

So if you scoop the remains of your fire, and it's mostly white ash, and plan for it to be used as a filter, you could run the risk of consuming some lye. That is of course if you are blind. The color of the water is a dead give-away, as low concentrations of potash/lye appear almost identical to urine (or even beer) in color. From the faint yellowish tint (when diluted), amber orange-ish color (like when someone is on heavy anti-biotics), to a dark amber (like maple syrup) when highly concentrated.

If you have mostly char but still have some white ash, your char will absorb the potash (and less of whatever you are actually trying to filter from the water).

One more thing. Burning of softer wood reduces the risk of potassium hydroxide too.

Kris, I use it to buck hides for making braintan buckskin. The KOH and CaOH aid in swelling the hide and breaking the hydrogen bonds that complete the collagen molecules, leaving it receptive to brains and formaldehyde. Leftover buck goes in the garden. I've been recycling the same buck, just adding ashes all winter and it's still strong enough to float an egg properly.

Ah! I completely spaced that wonderful chemical use of KOH, funny too as it is on my 'to do' list. I've only been recently extracting caustic potash, within the last 6 months to be exact, and it seems I've encountered nearly every possible problem I could encounter leeching the stuff! lol

Now I am kinda curious about your apparatus you use.

The one I slapped together is based on the 'old fashion wooden barrel' model that seems to be the most popular amongst the Internet, substituting plastic for wood. I've found that the pea gravel rocks tend to clog due to silt, frequently, and have currently been building a 'better design' that I hope to improve the flow.

I use a 5-gallon plastic bucket with a lid. Always put lids on your buckets, most especially if they contain any liquids or dangerous chemicals like ashes. For bucking hides, I fill the bucket about halfway with sifted ashes, and add about a gallon and a half of water and just dunk the hide in.
My seep bucket is simply another plastic bucket, I often use it for drip irrigation for plants in the yard that I don't want to stand there and water. It has a 1/4" hole in the bottom with a short piece of "ice maker hose" sticking out. I just line the bottom with grass, and pour in the water. You can pour water through it several times, saving the water each time, and then evaporate the liquid to make it more potent.

You'll need some way to check the potency of it, as it will have impurities. To get proper saponification of the fat and lye you need fairly close estimates of the lye's potency. I'm not really certain about "clarifying" seeped lye, but I'm sure there is a way to get it down to the familiar crystals of drain opener.
