Lake Effect Snow

Hey! We're getting lake effect snow of Lake Michigan. There's a band of snow streaming down off the lake extending all the way down to Bloomington, In. That's south of Indianapolis. This is crazy. I've lived here 20 years and I've never seen snow from the Lake extend this far south. Weird.

a lake effect is where cold fronts move over large bodies of water which have retained a decent amount of warmth, and have a slip of warmer air over their surface. it makes the cold fronts pick up a lot of moisture, and can cause heavy snows.

The snow can extend dozens of miles (kilometers) from the lake but in this case it was 185 miles (nearly 300 kilometers), which is really a long way for this area. Did someone mention global warming?

Well it's worse than you thought. We are getting this same snow and I am near the Tennessee line in Kentucky!! below freezing Temps. have us whee it will most likely stick. They are warning of secondary roads,untreated roads and Overpasses being slick with ice. Be careful out there!! We are at our forecast low for the day 16F.

It was just a light dusting. I just thought it was very odd that it extended so far south. Generally, lake effect is in the 30 mile or so range.

We got it here on the KY-WV area. I think it's "sewer effect" snow from the Ohio but it could be from the Big Sandy. Either way I expect the snow to have brown lumps in it.

BTW, looks like there's more snow on the way here too, they reckon snow on and off for at least the next 2 weeks. Temps have hovered around 0 degrees C since before Christmas and it looks like it set to continue for the forseeable future. Ah well looks like I'll be snuggling up in front of the fire with Bobcat, a blanky and lots of cocoa. What a shame!

Now if they had said sunny or just a few fluries we'd get pounded by snow... if they say rain we get sleet n ice... soooo.... I'll see thursday morning when I look out the window.

Well you can bet when the old lake effect starts up, northeast Ohio is going to get some. Over the past few days we've received between one and two foot of snow. It's been cold enough to keep it light and fluffy, easy enough to shovel. The wind is causing it to drift, that's the biggest problem.

I threw out our snow shovels years ago. If you can't use a snowblower on it, or sweep with a broom I just leave it. Worked on our 20 inch snow fall last week. Shoveling snow is a good way to wake up dead.

About 30 miles south west of me there's more than a foot, to the west and north there's about a foot.... here? not a bloody flake! I'm gutted! I'm probably the only woman in England prepared and I got no snow!!!!! 10 miles down the road they had 4 inches, I'd be happy with that! The temperature is way below 0 degrees C though, I'm defrosting the girls on a regular basis thoughout the day:)

The gas shortages referred to are natural gas(for heating cooking etc) not petrol fuel. The old separation by a common language thing again Pal! And yes there is widespread panic and folk are being urged to use less to conserve supplies. That's why I'm glad I have an open fire!

I looked at a conversion chart, to see how cold -38C is, and it turns out that -40C and -40F are the same temp.! (I think it's refered to as "friggin' cold!".):innocent:

Within a couple of hours we'll be receiving another snow front coming from the west. (3-5 inches) By the time that passes, later tonight, the winds are suppose to shift a bit causing more lake effect. (6-12 more inches)

We did get a break most of the day today, mostly overcast.

Well, we got sundogs out there, it's going to get colder. I generally use the whistle test. If you stand outside in the cold and try whistling and can't....it's too friggin' cold.

I went out and cleared the snow. Looks like 5 inches on the ground. The dog and I are just fine inside. Plenty of dog food for the both of us.

Oo, oo I found out we DO have snowblowers over here! great big ones. I had to laugh though, They belong to Yorkshire County Council and thy've been busy up on the high moors in the county, but when they get to the border with Durham, they turn round and go back! Durham doesn't have snow blowers.....

You can see that here as well. You can be driving down the road that has been plowed to bare pavement. You cross a township line or county line and you're knee deep in snow again.

We got over two foot of snow last week, I did the same thing, built a big pile of snow in a friends yard. I've let it settle real good, I'm going to dig it out with one of her boys this week. I'll post a pictures.
