Here's how it went down.

12:30 a.m. this morning there was a knock on the door. The dog went crazy. I have a doorbell and I thought it odd they didn't use it. I tossed on some clothes, picked up the 9mm and headed downstairs. No one was there. Hmmm. A quick walk around the inside of the house looking out. None of the security lights are tripped on. Hmmm. Back upstairs to bed. My home office is upstairs and as I pass by the doorway I see three guys in the street out front of my house. WTF?! I slip up to the window and watch as one walks to my driveway, eyes the house, then walks to the back of my truck. This is not good, I thought. He walked around to the driver's side cupped both hands to the side window, which was enough for me. Down the stairs the old fat man flew. Out through the front door as the guy is making a hasty retreat. He's now at gun point. The other two are booking it down the street. "Get your a$$ away from truck or you will be shot." He threw both hands in the air, "Okay, man, I'm gone, I'm gone." All three walked south down the street.

I live in a sub division and directly out of my drive is another road that loops a circle back on to my street about two blocks south of my house. Did that make sense? You can drive south on my street two blocks, turn on to a side street, follow it around and when it comes back out on my street you can drive right up into my driveway.

I came in the house and called 911. I explained what had just transpired and the dispatcher said she would send someone out. I could still see the three guys walking and relayed their location to the dispatcher. They walked south the two blocks and turned into the very street I described above.

A squad car was on scene in less than five minutes. He drove the circle street and stopped to look at one of my neighbor's vans. He drove around the circle, back on to my street toward my house and back down the circle again. I was standing in the front door when he jumped out of the car and gave chase to an individual. He ran him around a neighbors fir tree and back onto the street. I ran out of the house and down my driveway. As the suspect ran back into the street he turned toward my house only to find me running toward him. At that point he stopped and put his hands up. Suspect #1 down.

We now had no less than five squad cars in the area and when they set up a perimeter it was pretty clear they had at least one other cornered. Along comes the fire truck and ambulance to check out the first guy that was cuffed in the street.

By 1:45 all the excitement had died down and I was filling out a statement for the police. I also received the obligatory talk about protecting your home and property and shooting a juvenile. I smiled and nodded.

Two juveniles and one adult had just moved into the neighborhood from out of state. Several cars had been broken into this evening and they are still trying to tally all the damage. At this point, our new "neighbors" know that home owners in these parts tote guns and the police respond pretty dang quickly. I've also had a talk with my wife about concealed carry, retaliation and all that.

Quite an exciting evening. And nothing would have happened if they hadn't knocked on my door. I wouldn't have even known they were out there.

it's bad enough that people will steal and vandalize, but how stupid must you be to do it in your own neighborhood? especially when you're the new guy in town.

i suppose it's for the best, a dumb criminal is an easily stopped one.

canid
01-03-2010, 03:30 AM
i mean let me get it straight:

they burglarize vehicles in their new neighborhood.

they knock on your door to make sure you aren't up, but don't check to see if you had responded.

they ran from the police.

did they make any wise decision at all?

smittysurvival
01-03-2010, 03:41 AM
they left when rick told them too and didnt get shot.

they stopped when the police was chasing him and rick came out. avoiding being shot.

they didnt steal his truck which in that case he would track them down, slowly take off the safety, aim, and pop a few caps in them.

and then they. . . . nope thats it

Rick
01-03-2010, 03:46 AM
It's 2 F and they are out vandalizing cars at 12:30 in the morning. No respectable crook in their right mind would be working in those conditions.

smittysurvival
01-03-2010, 04:02 AM
thats the point! reverse phsycoligy. they think that since you dont think that the will be stupid enough to go out and vandilize in those conditions. so your gonna be off gaurd. so of course they are gonna work in those conditions because they dont think that you will catch them. but they didnt think of one thing. . . rick is a gun toting cowboy ninja

I stayed up keeping guard I guess. I figure the adult will have to bail out but the juvies will probably be released tonight so I thought I stay up a while just to make certain nothing else goes on. I guess they are still finding damaged cars. The cops made another run down the street just a few minutes ago. Probably taking a report.

smittysurvival
01-03-2010, 04:21 AM
and if that cowboy see them then he is going to pull out his six shooter and make em dnace

Rick
01-03-2010, 04:22 AM
I guess I would say also that's the first time I've ever pulled a gun on anyone. I suppose if he had been armed it could have been a different ball game but he had the good sense to show his hands and keep walking.

01-03-2010, 04:48 AM
It's now 3:45 and the cops just completed a ground search around the neighbor's fir tree. I'm not certain what they were looking for but they apparently found it. They retrieved something out of the snow and left. I guess the reason for running around the fir tree in the first place was to ditch something. Maybe the little sh** was armed after all. Who knows?

smittysurvival
01-03-2010, 04:53 AM
maybe it was the tool he had been bustin the cars up with

Rick
01-03-2010, 04:55 AM
Could have been. Earlier, I thought they walked him around the tree but it's a bit dark down there. All I could really see was the flashlight and their silhouette going around the tree. But I commented to my wife then that it looked like he might have tossed something.

canid
01-03-2010, 05:04 AM
i give 40% it was dope, but it could well have been a tool.

Rick
01-03-2010, 05:08 AM
Whatever it was there were two cars doing the search so they were pretty adamant about finding it. My original thought was weed. I never thought about some tool. As I said it's dark down there so I can't really tell what they had but they picked up something reasonably small and was looking at it. He carried it back to the car in one hand. Apparently the officer chasing him saw him toss it. Either that or it was something like glasses that the guy lost. Who knows. Hopefully, it will be in the paper.

I think it was a valuable lesson about being prepared. If you've ever been in that type of situation you know quite a few thoughts go through your mind as you attempt to sort out what's going on. You have some decisions to make with not much data and those decisions could have long term impacts for either side or both sides.

Today I'm going to focus on "what if". I think that's a valuable and valid role play for this situation.

What if the one person I confronted had been armed?
What if all three had been armed?
What if I had found the guy inside my truck?

That kind of thing. It's important to me to step through those scenarios. I know I can never answer them but I can consider them and that helps me to better prepare for the safety of myself and my family.

I'm Glad you are OK!! It could have been a weapon that he threw away. If you already "had the drop on him" he would've been smart enough to realize going for a weapon would've just gotten him shot. It could've been a tool too, we may never know.

Rick I think I know you well enough to say that, even if he had been in your truck you wouldn't have shot him. You might have had to clean your truck seat though. No not blood, I think his sphincter would've cut loose.

It is funny that you said that you didn't think that they would be out in this weather though. I was thinking last night, That maybe I should make a run around the Farm just to check the barn and stuff. I was thinking that this would be the perfect time for a crook to hit someone. So darn cold out that anyone with a lick of sense would be inside trying to stay warm. The perfect time for a crook to hit when no one is wanting to venture out. So cold that most people don't even want to look out their window.(or their windows are fogged up from the cold, preventing them from seeing clearly) Crooks are opportunistic predators, waiting for that weak moment in our defenses. When you think it is the least likely for them to hit is exactly the time they do hit.

The cop that took my statement was very professional. Seemed like a nice guy. He told me I had the right to protect my property and he wasn't trying to tell me what to do but just think about the consequences of shooting a juvenile inside my trunk. I told I wasn't going to shoot him. Just introduce him to my 9mm over and over and over about the face and head. He laughed and said okay.

Rick
01-03-2010, 10:19 AM
As an aside to this, I told the officer they sure responded quickly. He said if I had called two weeks ago when everyone was stealing stuff to make money for Christmas they probably wouldn't have been here so fast. I should read a book on how criminals think. I was probably more vulnerable the few weeks before Christmas than now and didn't even realize it.

Glad the family's OK, and the toerags were caught, always a BIG plus!
I have a little system here, it may not be practical for everyone but as you all know, there are major issues over here regarding home defence.
1) The door is locked as soon as it's dark. If anyone knocks on the door, I check to see who it is. If I don't know them, I open the window to see what thy want, not the door.
2)I have very good home contents insurance. Any serious threat and I fully intend to let them walk in and take whatever they want. I'll run and hide. Stuff can be replaced, my life can't.

It's a sad state of affairs, but I value my life and freedom far more than any possessions.

Way to go Rick!

I do that a lot. I look at it as "Zen and he art of....." survival, dealing with dishonest people, I hadn't thought about your situation because currently I'm unarmed beyond a musket. All the more reason to what if this one.

I may be fooling myself, but I feel going through that thought process frees up your thinking when your are actually faced with a situation. I look at it as reading the instructions before you begin a project. You are better prepared because you can recognize the situation and respond because you have already thought about the what ifs. You still have to think and decide. The difference is that you can reference your what ifs instead of working them out in the moment. I think that would equal a quicker decision response time.

I'm sort of anxious to see the write up because I'd like to know where they live. Hopefully, the adult's address will be in the news report. In any case, I'll keep an eye out and post a follow up on here for your viewing edification.

Sourdough, if I had been in that situation where you live, I doubt I would have gone outside. I think I would have opened a window instead. One would think the threat isn't as great in an sub-urban environment since noise arouses neighbors and you are generally confronted with kids, which is what I thought I was dealing with all along. In a local such as yours, you can guess that the person is adult, more than likely armed and you are it. The cops will just write up the report about how you were killed.

I can read it in the papers now!

TWINKIEMAN THWARTS THIEVES!

Last night 3 thieves who braved the cold to ransack vehicles in the area met their match when they ran into a fat, old, gun-totin' red-neck in a Twinkie suit!

"Honest!" The adult of the terrible trio was reported as saying: "I don't know what he was talking about! I wasn't going to take any Twinkies! We was cold, that's all, and we was going to climb into his truck so's we wouldn't freeze; honest!"

The 3 offenders have been charged with many counts of theft, attempted theft, child endangerment,(since the adult was responsible for putting the 2 juveniles lives in danger.) & overt stupidity.

Rick _________, also known to many as "Twinkieman." was rewarded for his act of heroisim by the local citizenry with a plastic police badge & a Lone Ranger secret decoder ring! He has also been bestowed with two other honorable titles: "Ninja Cowboy," :shuriken::ph34r: & "Deadeye Rick!" :cowboy:

It has also been reported that the villainous trio has been approached by "Tru TV" for the rights to their story to be aired on their "Smoking Gun" program; "World's Dumbest Criminals".... :stupid: :sneaky2:

Seriously though, good goin' Rick!!!

Rick
01-03-2010, 01:15 PM
Pal - I'm not doing the "what if" to determine what I could have done differently. I'm just using it as a training tool to see what other scenarios could have developed from this and would I have been ready for it. My wife and I had a serious discussion about it this morning.

What if I had been disarmed?
What if I had been shot and they came inside?
What if I needed backup?

Worthwhile things to consider in my book just as a means to be further prepared.

I think I acted appropriately under the situation. Judging from their size I assumed them to be juveniles although one was a good head taller than the other two. Still, I didn't want to overreact with some kids. I also didn't want to be in a 3 on 1 situation unarmed knowing that kids don't mind packing these days either. I ordered them off the property, they complied so I removed the immediate threat then came inside and called 911. Simple as that from my view.

A few years ago, there was a SWAT standoff with a neighbor across the street (actually, they thought he was holed up, but he had gone). It was a strange occurence, coming home to an armed police officer, pointing an AR-15 at my neighbor's house, from my front yard (hiding behind some trees). Fortunately, nobody was hurt, and the guy they were looking for, who was not the homeowner, was eventually caught and, as far as I know, is in prison.

Since then, I find myself playing "What-if" scenarios in my head. I hope it never comes to it, but it's best to be prepared, even if it's only mental preparation.

Glad you're ok, Rick.

Yeah, I don't think the neighbors would take too kindly to me running from the truck and doing a tuck and roll behind the birch tree armed with a carbine. It's probably best I just think through scenarios.

Glad you're ok, Rick.

You were lucky. Last summer I was alone and watching TV. I glanced out the door and saw a man zip over the hill at the edge of the road carrying a 5gal drywall bucket full of liter bottles. I picked up a Walther PPK/S that was handy and went out, didn't see the guy. Friend of mine pulled up and I told him. He said the man had a small patch of marijuana and was watering it and noticed the Walther in my back pocket, asked if it was accurate and I double tapped a rock about 20yds away. He backed out and went home, I stayed leaning on the fence nice and quiet. Looked down and this guy was crawling up the hill in the dust, weeds & poison ivy straight toward me. He made it to the top and saw me, pistol concealed and I read him the riot act about being on my property and what would happen to him. I had trouble not laughing because he kinda wet his pants with the dirt and all kinda muddy looking. I told him to beat it and the usual. Wife was going into church when a friend of hers called her about a shooting where we lived and since I shoot lots she ignored it. I learned he went home, changed his pants and his live-in called the SP and reported I shot at her boyfriend twice. The officer asked where I lived, she didn't know my name and he told her I didn't shoot at him because he was still alive. She argued but was told to stay well away from my house or he would lock both of them up. We had a good laugh, me and the officer but the wife did a lot of explaining to her friends that called her. I knew I was ugly but didn't know I looked mean. My stellar reputation remains intact.

Hey Crash, thanks for the suggestion on the police report. The PD just faxed a copy to me so now I know who the guy is and where he lives. It turns out he is 19 and lives several blocks from me. He was charged with 1 count of Theft under $100,000, which is a felony, one count of Unlawful Entry of a Vehicle, which is a misdemeanor, and one count of Receiving Stolen Property, which is a felony according to the report. The other two were juvies and their names were removed from the report I received. The adult requested an attorney and was transported to the county lockup. The juvies had their parents present and the father signed a waiver so they talked. They said they went out that evening with the intent of breaking into unlocked cars. They even took a bag with them to carry the goods in. They caught them with a satellite radio, a hacky sack, an iPod charger and "other smaller items" that they took from three unlocked cars.

A few "Morals of the story" here.

Don't be lead astray by others. In this case I believe it was an older brother.
The crime probably isn't worth the time.
