Winter fun next week end

I am an adult early 50's Eagle scout and have camped my whole life so far, but have not done too much winter camping lately but know how to stay warm by staying dry. Any way I live in the middle of the country where it has been snowing and is now pretty damn cold. I think today it got to a whopping 3 or 4 above. I know you folks North of me are laughing because it's not a below zero regular temp reading but this is always a wet cold. Lots of water in the air. Any way my fort'e is fire building so i will be manning a fire building station where boy scouts can try their hand at fire starting in bitter break your fingers off cold with a Bow or a flint and steel or a Magnesium fire stick, or one wooden match. pick your medicine. No prize for doing it just satisfaction and learning something you didn't know yesterday. They will have 20 minutes to try there best. It will be fun to see who has the right fluffy tinder and then the next level and so on. If they fail no big deal this is a Klondike where they practice their woodcraft they have learned. The older scouts always show there stuff and the younger ones will pick up some tips I'm sure. because we have deep snow we will half barrels to help them get the job done.

You guys are mind readers. I bought a box of 20 pair. I thought of the exact thing plus i was going to use them in pockets in big loose socks for sleeping. hvae never done that but thought what the heck, goo chance to try this technique in damn cold environment. I usually do the thing there i strip down to skivys. Put on new dry clean socks for sleeping and a stocking cap and into the sleeping bag I go. have never gotten cold since doing this but i do get copld feet from time to time so that's why the toe heat idea. I don't know though have never do it. It will be an experient for me.

We are doing our Klondike on the 15th. Fire building is on the menu. We are building a sled this week for the klondike. Pictures to come. :clap:

Rocks heated in the fire will do the same thing but the hotties won't get as hot and will probably last much longer.

I heated rocks to warm up it works well until they cool off.

I probably don't need to mention this but I will any way. Don't put the rocks in the middle of the fire. If they get to hot they can basically explode sending shrapnel is all directions. A neighbor of mine had a bonfire in her yard and a grapefruit sized rock exploded and she found a good chunk of it in her dining room 40 ft away. She used to like the scorch marks on the rocks.

Did someone say Klondike? I've been so busy lately I forgot to mention to you guys that I've got myself involved in our scouts Klondike again this year. I really do like working on the this program. As some of you know I ran this event two years ago. I volunteered again this year and it will be held on the weekend of January 15-16-17th.

It's crunch time but everything is looking good. With all the snow we've been having we should have a nice base by next weekend.
