New Axe!

OK so the ole axe never turned up! Stolen I guess....I have been looking at replacing it and ran accross a Council Tool Axe at a local feed store. I bought it. It has a straight handle, would've prefered curved but was impressed with the Quality and the LARGE USA stamp in the steel. Wetterlings and Grandsfors make a nice axe but at twice the price of this one. I thought I'd get the word out! Nice value and excellent quality here is a link! This one won't be left in the back of the truck!

One question for you guys.....The handle is unfinished, no laquer or anything. I recall someone posting the care of an axe handle but can't find it. Any tips on keeping this hickory handle in good repair?

My grandfather always told me to use a good linseed oil and to not leave them out in the weather. The metal parts also get a coating of machine oil once in a while, when sharpened, or if they are being stored for the season. I have some of his old gardening tools, saws and scythes which have to be approaching 60 years old now (though who knows how many times he may have replaced the handles himself).

I've never treated any of my wooden axe handles. I don't know if body oils are transfered from the hands, but I've got a splitting maul that I've had for 30+ years that is still going strong.

I have never treated any handles, thought the same as Crash and never had any problems. I have a handmade sledge, pick & shovel that my Grandpa used in the mines in the 1920s still in good condition, same with a scythe and a few dating back to the late 1800s.

I had 3 handles on my old axe....each had polyurethane or laquer on them and they always got black splotchy lookin rot on them, from beneath the coating. I am in the south and no matter if you leave it out or not, it will see alot of moisture. I think I'll side with the linseed oil....Thanks for all the input!

We go for linseed oil over here too Cowboy. My dad always oiled a new wooden handle before he used it, but I don't recall him reapplying after the initial coat. Which reminds me, I must get hold of his bits and peices from brother in law before they get filed under "R"

I am pleased to hear that there still are axes, Made in USA, out there.
Never heard of them either.
I have to check it out.

I have never treated any handles. Some came treated some not.
Seems that keeping them out of the weather is the best way to keep form getting all weathered and cracked.
Even if handles are treated or varnished, they still will become weathered if left out.

What I did is cover it in wax shoepolish and use a hairdryer to melt it in. I like how it feels...Splitting logs is easy! I am very pleased!

Haven't done it on an ax, but I have done my hawk handles by using a torch and lightly sear the wood.

Brings out the grain and sap, darkens it some, and tends to seal it up.
It's like using it own sap to coat the out side.

A lot of my rendezvous gear is done this way, tables, chairs, camp kitchen, tent poles, candle lanterns, boxes etc.

That handle interested me, seen many of them in KY all double bit. I do believe that's the first pole axe I've seen with a handle that shape. I never used one much, liked the double bit because I sharpen each edge differently.
