Yesterday morning my Father-in-Law passed away. He'd been in the nursing home for quite awhile & had a bunch of older firearms & even more knives. The one that I wanted to remember him by was an old Kabar that he'd found buried in a parking lot with the leather handle completely rotted away. It had obviously been there for many years & may have come out of WWII. I'll Google it later. On one side it's stamped "Ka-Bar" & on the other:
"USN MK2". There is also no sheath. My late father law was a good hand with making things out of leather and made his own leather hand grip by forming leather washers and clamping them down on the handle. I'm working on cleaning the blade but am at a loss here about the sheath. I have no materials, experience, or knowledge in that area & the one guy that I know of that did is dead & that's how I got the knife...any suggestions are welcomed.

Sarge are you wanting a sheath like the original or just a sheath. Google Brigade Quartermasters and look at the sheaths they offer. They have them in all different configurations and may even have replacement sheaths for the the knife you have.

BTW, This knife may have had a handle made out of something other than leather according to the link supplied by Rick. Maybe Crash knows more on it. :cool2:

My late Father-in-law, as well as my Mother-in-law, who, BTW, has been in a nursing home for the last 7 years; treated me better than my own parents! My Father-in-law was an outdoors-man. He worked as a farm-hand for most of his life. About 8 years ago he had a quinteple by-pass from which he was not expected to live through, but he did, with flying colors! About a year ago, with both heart problems & diabetes controlled by insulin, he too entered the nursing home. It was a horrible experience for somebody who loved the outdoors. Do you know what people do or how they live in a nursing home? My wife & I have vowed that no matter what happens to either of us, we will never enter into one! In many ways his death was a release from a reality that he had much trouble facing. He'd almost died several times in the last year, but he was a tough old buzzard. Now he's gone, but I'll never forget him! :cool2:

My condolances Sarge. I really don't know that much about them. Making a sheath isn't too hard. There are some good on-line tutorials, and if I can offer any help, I'm glad to do it. Many of the knife supply places sell the leather rings/spacers (whatever they're called).

The MK2 came with a hard fiberglass sheath like the one shown. You have the same kind of Kabar that I have.

Are the leather discs loose? If so, time to research and get some new ones. If not, you can sand them down.


Best place to get a hard sheath is ebay. Yeh, ebay. You can find a deal if you have some time.

Thanks Frank! The leather is tight as a drum, he did good leather work. I want to emery cloth the blade and sand down the handle. I'll check e-bay for the knife sheath! Out of all of his knives this is the one I asked for as it will always remind me of his resourcefulness. He always came up with low-cost ways of repairing something & extending the life of it. :cool2:

Yeah, I'm not sure either. E-bay has quite a few leather Ka-bar sheaths at reasonable prices, but I might just be patient, checking back every few days, & see what develops. FVR has the exact same Ka-bar & has displayed the proper sheath. If that don't happen then I may just order a leather one. :cool2:

First let me say that I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm glad that he is now in a better place. (I hope that came out right.)

While your looking, don't forget gunshows. Around here gunshows always have knives, and some very knowledgeable knife guys. It may be a source for what you want.

(Not to mention , that it's a good excuse to go look at all the toys!)LOL

My Condolences Sarge. That is a fine knife. My Dad used to have one similar, Marine Issue but I never found it when he passed away.

Oly I got that same list from the funeral home when my own dad passed away. Problem was, it should have been filled out before he died. Please everyone, at some point soon, do your families a favor and put this information somewhere safe (NOT a safety deposit box though) and make sure someone knows where it is.

Well. I've taken a lot of the pitting off of the blade and sanded the handle down to where it is a lot smoother, however I was wondering if there's some sort of treatment I should use on the leather handle? Any thoughts? :cool2:

"1. Quick hard leather finish.

This finish is the one to use if you want a maintenance-free handle that is completely waterproof and behaves just like wood. None-knife people will usually be stunned by the beauty of it. Particularly because it doesn’t feel like leather at all.

Sand the leather gently to 240 grit, then apply a drop of cyanoacrylate glue and immediately rub it over the whole surface with a latex or vinyl gloved finger. You are not trying to saturate the leather, just stick the surface fibres together. Leave it for about half an hour, then sand with 240, 320 and 400 grit abrasives in turn. You should start to see some loose fibres coming through at this point. Repeat the cyanoacrylate step. This time sand with 240, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit abrasives (Fig 15).

At this point you can treat the surface as if it were wood. CCL Traditional English Oils and Polishes make two finishing sets that are gorgeous, the knife Handle Polish set (supplied by Brisa) and the Knife Handle Oil set. The polish set uses a fine lacquer base which is then mixed with oil to give a gorgeous sheen, superb for collector’s knives. The Knife Handle Oil set is better for working knives; it uses a sanding sealer followed by a conventional, but rather light oil. Either of these finishes will work well to give a hard very attractive surface that requires virtually no maintenance and has none of the traditional properties that make leather handled knives so attractive to knife users. Frankly any technique you use on wood is worth trying. If you want to colour the leather, use a spirit dye between the first and second coats of cyanoacrylate.

2. My version of a traditional finish.

This is my favourite finish. It takes several days to do well, is rather less pretty than the hard finish, but gives you a real leather handled knife. For this finish, you need a good quality soft leather grease. Gold Quality Laederfedt (from Brisa) or Pecard’s leather dressing work equally well. You also need some gum tragacanth and good quality abrasive sheets from 180 grit to 2500 (Axminster cloth backed are ideal).

Sand to 240 grit as usual, using a light action. Now rub some grease into the leather with your fingertips (Fig 16) Massage it in quite hard for a few minutes, then leave it to settle for half an hour. Wipe off any excess, then sand very lightly with 320 grit abrasive. Rub in some more grease, wait half an hour and sand with 400grit abrasive. Repeat this for 60, 800 and 1000 grits, then substitute a drop of gum tragacanth in place of the grease. Rub this in very hard with vinyl or latex gloved fingertips (helps the polishing). Leave for half an hour, then sand with 1200 grit abrasive. Do the same for 1500 grit, then leave it overnight. The next day, rub in some leather grease very gently and sand with 2000 grit abrasive and repeat for 2500 grit. Leave it overnight again and finally, just rub in some grease, polishing with a cloth.

There are a number of minor modifications you might try. For example, if you have a buffing machine, or an attachment for a pillar drill to take a buffing wheel at low speed, you can buff the handle with pure hard bees-wax after the gum tragacanth stage and call it quits. This gives a lovely firm, but non-slip grip. If you don't have any gum tragacanth, you can just buff with bees-wax after about 1500 grit and leave it at that"

im sorry for your loss sarge.

i suppose if you took some deer hide and worked it down then it might be useable, work it to cover the balde with about a fourth of an inch hanging off the side that isnt the blade and two strips to go up over the hilt. sow the leather together at that extra fourth of an inch and fasten buttons on to the strips and to a place on the body of the sheathe that will hold the knife as still as you can. i used glue for the buttons. lay weight on it with the blad inside of it and the leather will shape to the knife. if you have more space then you want where you sowed it then you can resow at this point. use stong string.cut slits in the back to strap to a belt. did this with one of my dads old knives and he actually liked it enough to pay me for it. best twenty bucks i ever earned.

Here's where I'm at so far. the 1st pic is the the way it looks right now knife before I ever started working on it, the 2nd is what it used to look like, the next post will show the leather U.S. Navy Ka-bar Sheath I bought off of e-bay for it. Now if I can only figure out how to dress the leather handle! :cool2:
