info on 55 gallon drum stoves

i'm looking for some info on these stoves. 55 gallon drum stoves.. i have read a little about them.. pro's con's and so on.. i've read putting some sand in the bottom of them to keep them from burning out.. also building block walls around it... so on an so on. anyone ever used these before..? to me i see the ash building up in them.. in my thinking you couldn't use it longer than 3 or 4 days before you had to put out your fire and take a shovle to it. i don't see info on that.? guess i'm looking for someone to say.. yea i had one in my cabin.. every 4 days we had to get rid of the ash.. the sand we just changed once a year.. worked great.. block base an wall not a good idea.. not a lot of trouble.. but i want someone to say that...that KNOWS this info to be true. i trust the people here to tell it like it is.. not sell something !!!!!

I have about 40 years experience with barrel stoves. My current barrel stove is about 25 Gal. and I clean the ash out maybe every 30 to 40 days in the winter. Mostly I burn spruce and some white birch, and a little black birch.

I've used them and many people have. We used ash and oak and they still lasted quite a few years. We used sand and didn't clean the ashes out too often. Less often than the air tight stove. The ashes keep the all nighters burning longer...or there would be more coals in the morning to start a fire because the ashes insulate the coals and keep them from dying. One of these stoves began to burn out and we just lined the inside with some loose metal and it was fine. They burn out at the top of the sand and some fire bricks would help them last even longer. If you weld a flat top on it, it can hold a couple 5 gallon buckets for hot water easily. You can cut the firewood longer too, which saves some labor. They work just fine.

When I was younger we had one in our cellar for about 20 years. Well, it was similar to an oil barrel, more oval in shape but thin-skinned. We had it lined with fire brick about half way up and it didn't burn out. Cleaned it about once a month. Sucked cuz it was a top loader. You had to make sure the fire was burned way down to add wood and be quick or you'd smoke yourself out. But it kept the whole basement warm.

What it did do was rust. The cellar was damp in the summers. We didn't use stove black so can't recommend you do or don't. You also might want to have a chimney cover or rain-trap on the elbow of the stove pipe to keep water away from it. You don't want it damp on the inside when not in use.

Lehman's sells the hardware you can make your own. I don't think I'd use this one in the house though...
