I just can't believe it.. not in this little town.
I was in the attic of a house tracking down a leak, came back out to get my tools out of the box to go up top, and the toolbox was gone!
apparently they just closed the box, and toted it off out of the bed of my truck without even looking in it.
I can imagine some brother lugging that 25lb box of rusty crap along like he's really got something, hahaha!
let's see, he got 2 hatchets and a hammer, 2 utility knives, a wore out chalk line, some sweaty filthy nail aprons, 2 flat bars, some rusty nails, some rusty blades. hahaha. it's really quite funny to think he stole something when there was all that other stuff in the truck that could be jacked, but he grabbed the crappiest box of crap that he could possibly get.
It probably set me back $200 bucks for new tools, which is a pretty big deal.. haven't had a solid week's work in 3 months, with the random weather we've been having.. but I've got credit with the supply house where my family has done business for nearly 50 years, so I'm covered. We're like family.
Just thought I'd share peoples stupidity.. mine and his hahaha!

Man that sucks.
On another note, I found 2 hatchets and a hammer, 2 utility knives, a wore out chalk line, some sweaty filthy nail aprons, 2 flat bars, some rusty nails, some rusty blades by the side of the road. Score!

Had an old TV ripped off from the back of my truck once.
Old tube type 27 in weighted about 150 lbs.
Didn't work.
Was on it's way to the dump, but didn't have any help to toss it so was still in the truck.
Would have liked to have seen the poor sucker that hauled that heavy SOB home, only to find out that he had to throw it out. Boohahahaha.
Did break the latch on the cap though, so I had to pay for that.
Anyway it still sucks, kinda make you wonder, and be more watchful...........

Back when we didn't have anything better to do we used to put some of our garbage in gift bags, leave it unattended and watch from a distance. It would disappear without fail anywhere from 10min to 1/2hr.
Highly recommend this for free entertainment!

During the big garbage strike in NYC in the 70's people wrapped their trash like that quite a bit. They never had a problem getting rid of it.

My father-in-law had a plastic grocery sack taken out of his pick-up while at a grocery store awhile back. He didn't say anything to anybody because it was what he put the garbage he'd collect from inside the truck in. I'd of loved to see the look on the thief's face when he opened the sack & looked inside! :sneaky2::sneaky2::sneaky2:

Take empty tool box & nail down securely to open bed of pickup; fill with tools & park truck in area where liklihood of it being stolen is high. Fill tool box with old, useless tools, rub poison ivy juice on the handle & set up video camera out of sight, but focused on truck, use zoom as needed. Watch & laugh as idiots try & steal the tool box. Be nice & offer them calamide lotion. :sneaky2::sneaky2: :innocent::innocent: :cool2:

In good ole DC we would epoxy a quarter on the sidewalk, cover it with a traffic cone and at lunch remove the cone. Gave us plenty to watch while eating, also in a shopping center in Springfield, VA an old lady was tottering in the parking lot with a paper bag in her hand. A younger woman snatched it, pushed the old lady down, ran to her car, opened it and fainted. The cops didn't have to chase her, she stole the old lady's dead cat she was taking to the vet to dispose of.

one day, a farmer walks past his garden and notices that a ripe watermelon he had planned to harvest is missing.
he tries to let it go but he can't.
a few weeks later another one turns up missing.
he is angry by now, and has a bright idea. he heads to the shop and starts making a sign.
planting it in the melon patch, he walks away satisfied. the sign reads: 'dear theif; one of these watermelons has been poisoned and only i know which. i'd like to see you steal them now.'
returning the next day he finds his sign has been over-written. it now reads: 'dear farmer; all of your watermelons are now poisoned. i'd like to see you try that one again.'
moral: it doesn't pay to anger or escalate conflict with thieves. they are likely to have less honor than you.

Ole WV, someone stuck a quarter in the sidewalk as it was setting. I saw that several folks had tried to pry it out unsuccesfully. I picked up a rock and womped it one time and it popped right out. I took it home.
I had all my personal HVAC tools stolen once. It was company policy to lock trucks when in the field. The stuff got stolen inside the shop after hours by an unknown fellow employee.
I was at the beach here in Brazil once and went into a food stand to get something to eat. I had a pair of sandals that I set down to get my wallet out. I paid for the food, bent down to pick up the sandals and they were gone.
That sucks about your tools. Mac
YCC - I don't know what kind of area you were in but if there are any surveillance cameras in the area it might be worth investigating to see if the thief was caught on tape. I'd make a police report even if it's just to document what happened. It's possible this is part of a pattern they are already investigating.
The thief took your tools and left his/her integrity in exchange. I'm not certain what you can do with something that small, however.
I worked with a guy that found an envelope containing $300 in a phone booth. He took it to the police station and turned it in. Later than afternoon an elderly lady stopped at the police station to inquire if someone had found it. It turned out she had just cashed her social security check and that was all the money she had for the month. We never know what's on the other end of our new found fortune. I've always admired that guy and never have forgotten that one act of honesty. That's how it SHOULD work, IMHO.

There was a article in the paper here a couple of years ago, a guy had a article set out in front of his house that he was trying to give away, no takers, put a sign on it after a week of trying to give it away, $10 it was gone the next day

I filed the police report and the officer and I had a good chuckle. I doubt there are any surveillance camera's anywhere in this county.. we are a pretty rural community (a county with population of only about 3500)
on a lighter note, I wasn't going to charge the lady I was working for because she and her husband are elderly, on a fixed income, and the husband is quite sick. She asked me what she owed and I told her "nothing". she offered to put a reward in the newspaper and pay the reward if the tools were returned. on top of that she gave me $20 to help with getting new tools.
I left there and went to another job which was a follow-up on a job I did last year. I fiddled around checking a few things, cleaned the leaves off the roof for the lady, and she gave me another $35 towards new tools. I wasn't going to charge her anything either, but she insisted, because I was so nice about cleaning off the roof.
When it seems morale and honor have fallen off the face of the planet and you find yourself doubting humanity, you turn the corner and find that people really aren't that unwilling to help a fellow who earns his keep. A thief steals from an honest man, and immediately following, two people perform acts of pure kindness.
It's a beautiful world.
Even when something like this happens, all you can do is look towards the heavens and thank God that the whole world hasn't gone to hell (yet). Remember to pay it forward guys. Good deeds are rewarded with Good deeds!

YCC I am sorry to hear about the loss,But am really happy that these other people have shown acts of kindness. It does help to re-kindle faith in the world as a whole. I hope you get your tools back.Were any of them Marked? if they were maybe the LEO's can put a BOLO out at the pawn shops and such. If so maybe the thief will be caught after all and get his "reward".

YCC, that's good to hear.......the whole world isn't complete deranged....yet.
Had a cheap ($15) power booster" stolen from my old beater van. It was unlocked, and I really didn't care if the whole van was stolen.
Must have been hot or in a hurry, because he left his insulated Wrangler Jean jacket hanging on the door......with a full pack of smokes inside. (sadly it was too big form me, so gave it away)
It did sorta pizz me off that he left the door open, dome light was on, ran the battery down, so had to jump it to get to work.
I do believe "What goes around, comes around"

YCC, I'm sorry for your loss. It's a shame that we have people like that around, but you are right. It's still a great world, and most people are good.
I also believe that if we try to be good people, we will experience joys, that the POS that stole your stuff, will never know.
Keep that positive attitude........it's worth more than gold.:)

You've sure got the right attitude. When I was working I "fudged" a few things to keep from charging decent people. I had a Sunday job at an elderly widow's house. She had been robbed the night before of her Social Security check, even her wedding band. She didn't have a maintenance contract and I replaced all equipment and cut wiring. I gave her everything, including my phone # if she needed anything else. To keep from getting fired I called the duty supervisor in the Northern part of the state, whom I didn't know and told him any problem, take it out of my pay I wasn't gonna charge her. He actually let the $300 or so slide, I would like to have caught those SOBs myself, but you can't have everything.
I'm guilty as well. I went out one time to an elderly, bed ridden gal that had just been brought home from the hospital. They didn't have very much of anything. They wanted the phone moved from the living room to her bedroom. All I had to do was punch straight through the wall and install about 5 inches of inside wire and a jack. The charge would have been $48 at the time. I did the work and canceled the order. Sometimes you have to do the right thing.

It feels good to help folks out, and even in my own misfortune, I still wanted to help all I could. I was quite humbled by their generosity. Good Folk do still exist in this dog-eat-dog world. Glad I can be friends with you guys :D I know I'm in good company ;)
