Hello all, I am new here on the forums! I am 26 year old male currently attending DeVry University, as a full time online student, here in Bristol Tennessee. I have been interested in wilderness survival, or primitive skills, for over a year now. I also have a two year old son, with my girlfriend of six years, so it makes things a little harder to "get out" and do things in the wild.
I look forward to "lurking" on these forums, and I may even post from time to time. This looks like a very promising forum to chat with other like-minded people!

For my BoB, I have all of the essentials, in my opinion - for me, to provide the four basic needs. Shelter, Water, Fire, Food; and in that order are they the most important.
(3 hours in bad elements, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food; any of these will be the end. Of course some can be stretched, but they are the basic rules.)

(2x) 10-Hour Candle (used when lighting fire is difficult, not for light).

(1x) Ultimate Survival Technologies StrikeForce fire steel. (Also includes the wet fire tender made from Ultimate Survival Technologies.)
(2x) Water-proof container with Matches.
(2x) Lighter.
(1x) FireSticks soaked in a very flammable liquid, for getting fires going under extreme conditions.
(1x) An entire bag of cotton balls, some soaked in Vasiline to become water-proof (For use with the StrikeForce).

That is everything that I can remember right now, and there is more that I have not purchased yet. A couple items that I have not included yet are a few books that I have in mind, and a pair of binoculars.
I also have a compression bag for each of us, for last minute items. The last minute items include clothes, hygiene products, and what ever food we can carry.

Welcome home. 2 years old is just right to start him out. Take some short outings in the woods with him. Let him toss some rocks in a creek or catch some grasshoppers. Well, wait until summer but you know what I mean.

Yeah, he should be old enough in the spring to start taking him out. I am really looking forward to it! I have already started looking for local places that we can go do somethings outdoors.
The Cherokee National Forest is about 15-20 miles away, and we can see one of the highest peaks of the mountains out of our front windows. It is actually only about 3-5 miles (straight) from here, but the roads make us drive all over to get to it!

No, don't wait 'til your kid is older, start now!! We took both our little boys camping when the youngest was only 2. Although on the last day of a week long camping trip he did get burned at the campfire and went to the Hospital(He wasn't burned too badly on the inside of his arm). When we asked him what he wanted to do for his 3rd birthday,would you believe all he wanted was to go Camping!? The thing is,is to go someplace where THEY have fun too. If they have fun they will want to go back so much that THEY will bug you to go.... ours do. Heck they want me to make them a camping spot in the yard to play in. BTW they are 3 & 5 years old and they love camping as much as I do.

I gotta say start em young... Its a great way to bond..... My favorite fishing partner is my 5 year. Old daughter! Nothing brings a wider smile to my face than when she says " No daddy, I put my own worm on hook!". Or the ever popular.. " ha ha daddy, I catching more fishes than you."

Yeah... My father does annoying things like that and gives our son back to us. It really ticks us off, lol... Not to mention, when we get him back... he crys for "papaw" and doesn't want to do anything until his little fit is over.

Yeah, they knew about that, too. And all those times that stuff came up missing or broken and no one knew anything about it? You guessed it. It's just our way of straightening Karma out.

If any of that were true, haha! I lived with my grandparents until i was 13 years old, while my father partied it up as a single guy... Even after I moved in with him, he was gone all the time!
Although, there were a few times that I got suspended for fighting in class... He use to tell me when he got called in to the "meetings", because of my behavior, it was like all of my teachers lined up to tell him what a destructive son he had! Man, those were the days! HAHA! Yeah, ok... karma. Shh! :P

Well, you certainly have a pretty good start.
Shelter, Water, Fire, Food; and in that order are they the most important.
Entirely depends on your environment. Fire could be the most important in a cold climate, water if it's hot and/or dry, shelter if it's storming and food if the other three are taken care of. Any of those environments could certainly occur in Tennessee.
Some thought on the BOB. I'd add
money in small bills and change. As much as you can comfortably afford. $100 minimum. Remember the electricity may well be out so ATMs won't be working and neither will credit card machines.
Toilet paper, toilet paper, toilet paper. Forget that and you'll have to defend yourself from your wife.
Female stuff (bleck!)
Prescription medications (30 day supply)
And special medical needs (ostomy supplies, diabetes meters, etc) or any pet supplies.
Boiling water in a pot the size of a canteen is going to be troublesome. It's not much water. Not only do you have to boil it but you have to let it cool as well. You'll need water for both you and your wife for drinking, cooking and hygiene so you really have a small solution. If you can afford a water filter like a Katadyn or MSR you'll be able to produce a lot of water in a short time. Short of that, invest in purification tables like Potable Aqua. They have a 30 minute wait time in clear water and you can be on the move while it works. You might not be able to stop long enough to boil and cool water.
Important papers and documents. If you have special licenses or certification for work you need copies of those in case you have to start over some place else. It might get money coming in over the short term. Copies of birth certificates, passports, etc.
You might also think about picking up a couple of GMRS radios. One for you and one for your wife. They might help you stay in contact if you get separated and most of them have a weather channel so you can keep up with the weather, which could be the whole reason you are using the BOB.

Thanks, Rick. I understand what you mean about things can change, my little rule of shelter/water/fire/food is just a guide line; it will always be twisted depending on the situation. I also forgot to add our Poncho's up on that list (doing that after this reply). The meal-kit we have is a pretty large kettle (for boiling water), the cantine is just for small tasks.
I have looked into the purifier devices you described, but I don't personally know anyone with them and wasn't sure if they were worth the few hundred dollars that would be spent on them. As for the toilet paper and women's items, those would go in the compressing bag as a last-minute items. :P (We always have those stocked up, lol.)
I do need to make copies, for storage, of our personal documents. Those would come in handy in a Katrina like disaster, I would assume.
Also, all of your other ideas would be a great addition too! Thanks for commenting. (I will check that link out too.)

I have an MSR Sweetwater purifier and it's the berries. A lot of folks swear by Katadyn. Both are good. The main thing you want is one that double pumps. That is it moves water on the up stroke and the down stroke. The length of the filter life is dependent upon the turbidity of the water but you can get a lot of water out of a filter and a lot of water in a short amount of time out of a purifier. If you get one just make certain you store your dirty water hose separate from your clean water hose so you don't cross contaminate. I keep my dirty water hose in a zip lock bag.
The large pot is just fine. I was thinking in smaller terms. Now you have to test the plan. You can do that by planning a week-end camping trip. Then simulate bugging out to start the trip using only your BOB. That means you can only use what's in it. That will let you see what is missing and let you stress your plan. It really doesn't matter if you plan to bug out to a hotel or the wild. Go there just as you would in a real event.

Yeah, that's what I was going to do last weekend. We didn't get out there as we planned though, as I stated in the other post, so we couldn't test everything. It was another challenge because I had never had to setup camp in the dark, after several thunderstorms (good practice). I tested several items in my BoB, but not everything. Some items I can't test yet, because of the season for hunting and what is allowed to be used.
I have practiced several things, like fire starting (with different methods from my BoB), in my back-yard 2-3 times a week for the last year. There is really only so much I can practice here though, as we only have a half an acre (in a subdivision) and only White Pine trees, lol. I also do as much research as I can, on the internet.
