View Full Version : TV question......TV Soundtrack Volume, can't hear talking....?

OK, I have a TV problem. News program (Talking only) Good, Football program (Talking only) Good.......But try to watch a Movie and I can not hear the words, because the soundtrack is so loud. Is there an adjustment for this, or a aftermarket filter that I can buy.........?

Are you watching the movie on a dvd or via public television? It could be the DVD player or the TV itself.

Most newer TV's have eq adjustments that you can set. Mine is able to switch from presets like 'live,' 'sports,' and 'movie' etc. If you have one of those you may be able to set it to movie which sets your eq to deal with music and dialogue. Otherwise, you may be able change eq manually by cutting your bass and bumping up the treble which would cut the blaring music down.

Are you by chance watching AMC? They cut the voice volume way down. The other sound effects are loud along with the commercials. It's very irritating!

I have the same problem. The Doc says age and too many loud bangs near my ear had something to do with it. Personally I think the stations do that just to mess with us mature gentlemen.

Yes, AMC and IFC.......but also DVD.......Really am I the only person who can NOT hear what the actors are saying because the Back round sound effects and the sound track is so loud. My guess is that in a theater the voice track comes out of front speakers, and the music is on the speakers in the very back of the theater. But on TV it all comes out of the same speaker. The only movie I saw in a theater in the last 12 years was "Open Range".

Why can't they remix the audio track of modern movies for home viewing.......??? The old movies on TCM are not a problem, so I don't thik it is me, but it could be.

Stupid question, but... does the T.V have surround sound type stuff? If it does, turn off the surround sound option and have it set to either stereo or mono only. I have a similar problem when someone who shall remain nameless fiddles about with the sound settings when he watches a movie.

It is AMC, etc. but I too had a similar problem playing DVD's on a certain DVD player. I tried setting it to stereo instead of surround and it didn't help. I think some DVD's are just programmed with surround and maybe you can't change the outputs.

It's very irritating and I'm glad someone else finally broiught it up as I thought I was going insane, or deaf.

I'm currently working on reprogramming a button on my remote. When I get finished should any commercial come on with the volume louder than what my TV is set for I'll just have to push the button and it will cause the head to explode of whoever is in charge of marketing for that company. Hopefully, that will fix the problem. Where do they find these morons?

Any time an advertiser/agency submits a commercial for broadcast it has to conform to certain specs including sound. Those specs are set by the station, not the advertiser.

The head of marketing for the T.V. station, may be the one who "turned it up", but the head of marketing for the ad. company got paid by the sponsor company, and choose to put their ad on the "loud " channel, thus making him/her responsible, as well. Both of them made us suffer, so that they could get ahead.:innocent:

OK, Maybe....you are correct. However my question is: why is this "NOT" a problem for me if I watch old movies on TCM.......? If a hearing aid will allow me to enhance to vocal conversation volume, and mute the soundtrack, is this a special type hearing aid....??? I have assumed that a hearing aid enhanced "ALL" Sound.

Sounds like a hearing aid can't fix that problem.
The new movies are sound "mixed" to be heard in a large theater and unfortunately no one at home has the ability to selectively dial up or down different elements of that sound like music, conversation and various sound effects. Back in the olden days the sound technology was less sophisticated and the movies play better on the more sophisticated TV sets of today.

I don't watch TV, don't have cable, and haven't hooked up any tv signal device for the local channels, so I don't know if I have a problem or not. :sailor:

Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss) sympathizes with you.

The senator yesterday introduced legislation that would require the Federal Communications Commission to bar commercials from being broadcast at louder volumes than the program material they accompany. It's called the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act, or CALM Act.

"Excessively loud television commercials are annoying and drive families away from quality programming," Wicker said in a news release. "This bill is a common sense approach to a problem that plagues individuals across the nation and will create a more enjoyable television experience. As a member of the Commerce Committee, I look forward to working with my colleagues to make this legislation a reality."

The bill has companion legislation introduced in the House by Rep. Anna Eschoo (D-CA).

Should this issue be a top priority for Congress and the FCC?"

not sure if your tv is still irking you, but I heard a report on CBS this morning about a bunch of people making fcc complaints that background noise and commercials were too loud. Afterwords I found this link on the fcc site.

Equipment the FCC says will help:

utomatic Gain Control (AGC) Circuits raise the audio level if it is too low, and lower it if it is too high.

Audio Compressors can tone down loud sounds. Compressors can be adjusted to eliminate many of the negative effects of loudness.

Limiters can keep the audio level from exceeding a pre-determined level.
#

Audio Expanders increase the range of sound. An expander can restore sound to its normal range and also reduce noticeable background noise.
#

Audio Filters can “screen out” specific audio frequencies.

i.e.- a toilet to flush your money down.
