Perhaps if we followed the Swiss example of training and arming our population, a reduction in the crime rate would occur. What is not clear to me is: do they also store ammunition at home? AndI like the annual shooting event sponsored by the government.

I would think that they must have the ammunition at home or all the firemarms wouldn't make a difference. I like the way they are thinking, and will do my part to follow their lead. Now to talk the government here to buying me my ammo, if they do, it won't be the right stuff.

There was a program here in the US called CMP..civilian marksmanship program or something like that. I should have googled it before I posted this to see if it still exists or if I remember it right but there was a list of criteria (a short list) and if you met them the government would provide you with a rifle. It was an M1 garand back in the early 90's

It looks like it became a for profit program back in 1996. I dont remember it well enough to say what the criteria was back in 92 or 93 when I looked into it but I am quite sure the gun was less than $50 if you were a member of a club that held competitions...I wish I could remember!

The Swiss indeed do keep ammo in their home, but it is their equivilant to a US soldiers issue load. For their shoots the Swiss govt. provides ammo at the range.
As tp CMP, you must do a qualifing shoot at a certified range and then you can purchase either an M-1 Garand or an M-1 Carbine. They are available in different grades and as the grade goes up so does the price. You also may have upwards of a 6 month wait before you recieve your rifle.
