View Full Version : I moved out of the cabin & House sitting for the winter.

Three weeks ago I moved out of my cabin, and moved 1/2 mile away to a awesome home which I am house sitting for the winter. What some of you know is that I had a hard time last winter, with a cabin full of puppies, a malfunctioning, burned-out wood stove, and a bitter cold snap of -18 to -31 below for about six weeks solid, add in hauling water for geese, turkeys, eight puppies, and two dogs from 1/2 mile away on a sled. 1" to 3" on ice on the floors and half-way up the inside walls, the sleeping bags and the poor dogs fur freezing to the cabin walls.

Well......I always wondered what my personal limit was, what was the limit of hardship I could endure.......now I know.

What I never told you, is that all last winter I had the keys to this home, just a 1/2 mile away, and was asked to check on it, now and then to see that the furnace was working OK. When advised of my hardship via e-mail, the owner said to move over there to his house, and not freeze to death, but I choosed not too, as I had to tough it out at the cabin, for the animals, which could not be moved.

So here I am, with two indoor bathrooms, and yes, I have taken two showers some days. Central heating, however I do keep the bedroom at 52*, and sleep in my sleeping bag on a queen size bed. I did just have a week of power grid down, and the furnace does require electric, so it was generator on/off every 4 hours. The house even has Direct-TV, but I have been so long without TV, that I watch the news twice per day, and read books, while warm, and with real lighting.

Now if there were just some women with in 45 miles.........:)

I am guessing you are quite possibly in Heaven. That's a very nice place. Good for you!! I'm glad you have a nice warm place to rest your head. That means an awful lot at our age.

Well......I always wondered what my personal limit was, what was the limit of hardship I could endure.......now I know.

Sourdough, theres on thing you can rest assured of; you dont have a damn thing that you need to prove to any of us.

Out of all the members here, with all of our varied experiences, some significant and some less significant, nobody here has done more, experienced more, survived more, thrived more, or endured longer in natures often hostile and unforgiving conditions than you have. Youve passed the test countless times and you survived!

Having the training and experience to survive in the wilderness or wherever you may be is invaluable. Many of us here have some comfort level, more or less, if we face circumstances that require our wilderness survival skills, hoping to extract ourselves from the situation as soon as possible. You, on the other hand, have made it a way of life.

I curse if I have a half-inch of ice on my front steps. You had 5 inches of ice under your bunk last winter. Just that one little fact alone puts things into perspective for me.

Its good to know that this winter will be a lot easier for you than the last one was. Theres a lot to be said for having indoor plumbing and a bathroom door even if you dont have to close it. And yet, your coming winter will still be far more grueling and challenging than any winter most of us have ever experienced.

As you sit back and enjoy your winter accommodations, the rest of us in the colder climates will endure what you would generally consider a heat wave. Many folks down my way will curse and grumble about the cold and the snow, and Ill do my share of that as well. And when someone really starts b!tching this winter, Ill just respond, Well, I have this friend in Alaska..

And I'm still trying to work out that "women" issue for you. :innocent:

Didn't know things were so bad for you last year (wasn't here then) but I'm glad you don't have to do it again. what about the geese though? No, don't tell us they're in the jacuzzi!:innocent:

Sourdough - ditto what Ken said. Enjoy your new digs. Now you've got more time to go out and enjoy instead of work (yes, I know that they are often one in the same) but now you get to choose. Enjoy my friend - I think you've earned a little relaxation.

Glad to know that you'll be comfortable this winter. It's nice to get a break once in a while and allow yourself to enjoy it.
Here's wishing and hoping that you'll recharge your batteries and perhaps meet a lady friend while you're at it.

I tried to trade Sourdough a woman a few threads back and he didn't respond. It'll be too expensive to ship her up there now, unless of course I send multiple boxes. Which would probably be a little awkward for all involved.

Maybe he'll save up his trading stock and we can work something out next spring. She should have another 20lb on by then. :)

I have got to Echo Ken's First paragraph!!! You of all here(and possibly sjj) have the LEAST to prove. You LIVE the life.You don't talk it. In a way I am relieved that you have that set up. Thank Goodness!! Whew! That's a load off my mind. I wasn't here when you suffered through last winter, But am glad you won't have to this year. You just take care of yourself,and catch up on some good reading OK?

Winnie, I tried to "Search" for the thread or threads from last winter, but failed, maybe Crash or Rick can find them.

As to the geese, Twice per day I turn on the warm/hot water faucet and fill two or three 5 Gal. water jugs, and drive the Ski-Doo 1/2 mile to the Gooses'House, to give them food, water, and fresh straw.

The Turkeys were killed or traded for Chinese Imperial Geese, Damn I hate those vile evil turkeys.

All the puppies and the Standard Poodle have been sold.

There is just me and the geeser'izers.

Turkeys. Freaks of nature.

Have you thought about renting out the cabin? There have been a bunch on here looking for that "back to nature" experience. Hand them a knife and point them toward the cabin for a nominal fee.

Rick, No......The last few weeks I have been jacking up the 12'X24' cabin and putting a skid under it. The dozer is backed up to the skid. If we get a break in the weather, I hope to skid it over near the waterline, where I built the concrete pads.

Enjoy! I can relate to the joys having a indoor bathroom and hot showers, after doing without. My wife still laughs at me (and still does not understand) while those things thrilled me after a very long deployment. Sometimes it is the little things.
As far as the COLD, no thanks. One winter deployment to Kosovo was enough for me. I prefer the southern tier for those types of trips. (Belieze was Awesome!)
I do figure one thing, like many northern tier places the summers up there must be really nice (and really appreciated).

Well I'm glad to hear your little friends are OK. I had visions of them joining you in your luxurious surroundings and you having to explain the goose poo to the owners:)

And I agree on the turkey thing!

While I won't ship up my current wife, I am willing to part with an Ex wife. She has been rather bothersome lately anyways. FREE!!!! And I'll even pay shipping on the first 3 boxes!!!

WOW, She must be a "LOT" of woman if it will require four boxes to ship her. The typical weight limit per box is 70 pounds. Not sure I could afford to feed that much woman.

You sir, are no gentlemen for refusing such a fine gift. I was even going to through in her attorney for no extra cost!!!

Of course this was all in jest. But I wonder if human trafficking does take place up in Alaska.....or if it could :sneaky2:

What made you decide to end up where you are, doing what you do every day?
If I remember bits and pieces from your posts, you've done a lot of different things in your life, been to many other places and enjoyed basic comforts we all take for granted.
What was the deciding factor to leave it all behind?

Glad you enjoy it :-) But I'm sure with a bit of work put into it to winterize your cabin, it would beat that place by a looooong shot!

It is a "Man's" book, and women find it hard to read. It is available online free (I think). It is the best work by, Jack London. If you don't like it, find a man who is lost in his life, and looking for meaning. (Note: this should be easy):)

Good onya, SD!!! Stay safe and healthy. Goes to show my old adage - "I don't have to learn how to be miserable, I already know how to do that"; although that doesn't negate the preparedness ethic by practice. People tend to forget taking advantage of those opportunities is just as much part of wilderness survival as other things discussed here.
