A Couple of Bucks

I look at the overall picture and to me it appears like this:

Yeah, the economy is still way down. Yeah, it's by far been the worst year, financially speaking, that many of us, including me, have had in a long, long time.

Still, I look around and I'm blessed with family, friends, and the things I need to live comfortably. When I'm asked what I want for Christmas, I'm really at a loss. I don't need a thing.

Many people, more than in a long time, are not so lucky these days.

When you walk by one of those red kettles and that ringing bell near the mall, or the supermarket, or wherever you encounter one, think about putting a donation in that red kettle, even if it's just just a couple of bucks. You'll probably never miss it, and it will go a long way to brightening up Christmas for a child, a senior, a family, or someone else who is just down on their luck this year.

Already done it,PLUS making a "lap" through town to hit every bucket for the local We Care weeknd warrior road block,the local radio station holds a 30 hour on air auction plus road blocks to raise money for warm clothes/shoes/ jackets for the kids who don't have those items.

Couple of bucks in each bucket doesn't amount to much,I'll miss a few soft drinks at work for the next couple of weeks,but will sleep better at night knowing I at least helped a child get a warm coat or shoes.

Amazing how it appears there is almost a separation in our society to the poitn that the poor tries to take care of the poor. I could go on and get way out of line, however I like you folks so...


Give what you are comfortable with giving, give without shame. But most of all.....GIVE.

If you can't give money, give your time. Make it a family thing.
Spend a couple of hours in a soup kitchen or anywhere where they serve those less fortunate than you.
Guaranteed to make you feel better and teach your kids how to make a difference.

Maybe the "giving bucks" are down, but from my observations, the number of people who are giving something is up. I hope it is a lesson that carries forward when times get better.
My toy trucks are all gone (dropped them off last weekend), am starting to make more. Don't want any of the little folks to go without if I can help it

Having been on the receiving end of the charitable goodness of folk, I nealy did a Poco with a 12yr old Winnie jnr in tow(a VERY scary time) I try my best to return the favour and give what I can. I'm sure Poco (and others) will agree there's some fine charities out there who do a sterling job and deserve our support.

I never donate to the "big" charities, too much goes to overhead. I like to donate cash directly to the places I know like the local FD food & toy drive, City Mission and a few others. I can see where it goes plus I know the folks and no flood of mail or calls soliciting.

I took the scouts around on Saturday for our local food drive. We didn't get that much, but we got some. My cupboard is a lot cleaner though. Easier to find the food we have in there now that all those other cans aren't in the way. :innocent:

Well we do a Christmas lunch for seniors, a Christmas party for little kids and a Christmas dinner on Christmas day for people in poverty and the staff "adopt" a family in need and we all put in for a Christmas hamper for them. Any leftover goodies and gifts from the kids party we send to the SA. After that I'm pretty much tapped out for time and I'm always pretty much tapped out for money but yeah, it's pretty hard to go past those red kettles and not flip them a few bucks when I've got them in my pocket.

My company, in conjunction with the University & the city, tried to beat the Guiness' Book of Records by having a food drive that went to all of the local pantries in town. We got a lot of groceries, even if we didn't beat the record. :cool2:

It played like a scene from a holiday movie -- a mystery couple, who didn’t leave their names or numbers, walked into a restaurant, finished their meal and then set-off a chain reaction of generosity that lasted for hours.

That’s just what employees at the Aramingo Diner in Port Richmond said a man and a woman did during their breakfast shift last Saturday morning.

“It was magical. I had tears in my eyes because it never happened before. I’ve been here for 10 years and I’ve never seen anything like that,” said Lynn Willard, a waitress.

Willard and other waitresses told NBC Philadelphia that the couple started the chain reaction by paying double: for their own meal and for the tab of another table of diners at the restaurant. There's no evidence that one group of diners knew the others.
“I could not believe it … and it continued and continued, it was very nice,” said Willard. “They asked us not to say anything until they left, but we said ‘Merry Christmas, that person picked up your tab.’”

For the next five hours, dozens of patrons got into that same holiday spirit and paid the favor forward.

The diner’s manager said not one person was concerned about price of the check -- which averaged between $12-$30.

“It was a surprise to all of us, the girls were even taken aback,” said Linda. “Those who took the check also tipped the waitress. So nobody had to do anything other than pass it on and that’s what they did. They just passed it forward.”

It’s a true holiday story that proves how a small gesture of kindness can create some magic.

Uptight snobs? got tired of hearing the bell ring and it was made illegal. that's all i know. Someone complained to somebody of importance and I haven't heard a bell ring in any of the three counties I frequent on a regular basis. Not sure if it's statewide or what.

It's been quite a few years now.
