I hope to get some feedback from glockcop here.

I just noticed in a thread that you were a police officer and you mentioned going through Katrina. What were the results of the firearms being taken from citizens. I was pretty shocked at that action. Because of course those are the times when we most need our weapons.

I saw a couple of videos and one where an elderly lady got roughed up pretty good in her own house by a law enforcement officer.

Also what do you think about the way it seemed the media reported the most insane stuff without investigating it at all.

Has there been any lessons that law enforcement has taken away from those events that can aid law abiding citizens in such a situation?

I was actually just thinking about this today. If you were prepared what would you do if the police started beating on your door with no warrant to enter? Your preparations could be for naught if they enter by force.

So what is the answer? Hide? I have no viable place to hide my family or my provisions. I guess I could lay some extra stuff and weapons out to make it look like they got all this dumb rednecks firearms and ammo. But, what happens if they make you leave your house?

Sorry for the delay. I just saw your post. There were cops that took peoples weapons from them but I was not witness to that. The ones that did were following orders. As a cop you are NOT obliged to follow an unlawful order. I was not one of them because I knew people would need to protect themselves in that desperate time. There were citizens shooting at Police, EMS, and Fire dept personnel on a very large scale. This for once was not a media fabrication. This is what generated that particular order I am sure. I would recommend that you do not advertise your being armed. Of course wip it out in a time of need but to walk around your roof top with a shot gun, right or wrong, is gonna invite unlawful actions from the bad guys and the cops that don't realize the "unlawful order" thing. I am no longer with that department so I can't say about their new policies. I would have to assume they have been changed though. I and most other cops in Katrina have a clear mind about our actions and I would not do a thing differently today. My men were told that such orders were "negotiable" and to use your descretion. Yes Gang Banger/Thug boys had their weapons taken away when unlawfully used. That is what is called "upholding the law" and it was to the letter I might add. The law abiding citizens on my watch were not harrassed for their excersizing their Constitional Right. The media did sensationalize much of the going on where cops were concerned. They need the ratings and bash cops and their actions quickly. Believe very little of what they report. Their reports represent very little of reality. Remember these are the guys that want you to believe that US soldiers are murdering innocent women and children and rape at will on a daily basis. It all makes for a great story that people want to hear. The "dirty laundry" syndrome is rampant in the media. They have no concept of "oath and honor" and therefore trammel it regularly. If you have a yard, you can always bury supplies in plastic buckets. This also helps if your house burns down.

Not gonna be of much use to you when they are under 12 - 14' of water. Besides, coffins floated out of the ground, I expect 5 gal buckets to do the same. The ground in N.O. is very wet and soft. Before the city was there it was marshland. The city is also quite a few feet BELOW sea level. When you dig just a few inches you hit water. Best.

Same thing happened to the US Cemetery in the former Panama Canal Zone. What a mess.

Well, I have been in South Florida all my life and so you pay attention to hurricanes a bit more than folks who are not as susceptible. We always heard that if a storm ever directly hits New Orleans it would be catastrophic because the city was 6' below sea level.

The hurricane of 1928 killed more in Palm Beach County. They had a muck dyke and it failed killing something like 2,500 to 3,000 in rural Palm Beach County. One lady was washed 5 miles to Belle Glade. She had every strip of clothing stripped off by the current and was beaten black and blue by the debris. But, she lived to tell about it.

Don't live where they have diverted water flow. Because sooner or late the water finds a way to flow to where it is supposed to go.

Glad to hear some officers chose the right course. Thanks for the reply.

A couple months before Katrina, a NOLA Parish EM Director put on an exercise with the exact Katrina scenario - NO elected officials showed up. I know the guy personally.

Go to the NRA web site and search for te DVD "Never Again" (just happen to have it sitting in front of me right now) It is a documentary of the illeagal (and brutal in some cases)confiscation of firearms, not from crooks, theives and criminals but from law-abiding citizens. I highly recommend watching it but be forewarned, if you are like me you will be fuming before it ends.

I was taught you never point a firearm at something you ain't willing to destroy. Those cops were willing to destroy those Americans and the very fabric of America by denying rights that were undeniable.

I have been stopped several times and I am always armed. I have never been treated with anything other than respect even after they realized I was armed.

I hate that we live in an America where a few misguided people put you in the situation to ask, "when THEY overstep their authority. Do I submit?" :(

The guns were kept in a leaking conex box sitting in drums that had water in them. i doubt the 10% of the guns they took are servicable today, not to mention the guns that were taken and never accounted for.

The vast majority of cops want you to have guns and have no interest in taking them from the good people in society. We, along with the Sup. Court know that cops cannot possibly protect every citizen all the time. That is your job to do by excersizing the 2nd Amendment. Chances are you will not meet a cop that does not like your guns. Buy as many as you can Brother, with our blessing. Best.

We have debated plenty before in the past but this makes me draw a line. Your choice in adjective reflects a clear anomosity and reprehension of authority. I understand your sentimate but like I said earlier, those cops were following orders. Right or wrong, they were doing what their superiors told them to do. In the academy you are taught to follow your orders to the letter. They don't teach many rookies that an unlawful order does not have to be followed. Calling them "scumbags" is not fair and definately does not put you in favor of any cop out there. When was the last time you had a few dozen hard core Gang Bangers shooting at you and your men. WOW...That long huh? If you think you can do a better job FEEL FREE TO STRAP ON YOUR B*LLS AND PUT ON A DUTY RIG. Until then, keep the cop bashing to a minimum Pal. Your condescension is not appreciated. IME most folks that overly critisize police officers could never be one. Most people are just not cut out for it. Especially the over critical. Sorry if I'm on the offensive but comments like that piss me off!! My brothers of the badge were no scumbags!!! They were fine men that I was honored to lead and serve with. If you have the "brass" I have a spare gunbelt for ya.

Yes. There were officers from all over the country. Not just NOPD. Also, the leaking boxes and drums with water in them that were mentioned contained evidence from BEFORE the hurricaine and were rendered in that condition by the flood water. It helps to get the facts straight before it can be accepted as gospil. The DVD may say otherwise but I know what I'm talking about. I am a huge proponant and member of the NRA but their documentary is flawed. Thanks for the back up Rick. Best.

The NRA documentary IS FLAWED plain and simple. I did not say those officers not knowing better was a defense. The fact is that most of those guys did not know. Calling cops scumbags as a blanket statement is not excusable either. I do accept the appology but it still stinks to be so underappreciated as you claim to already know. Those actions were from a minority of cops out there. It was the exception not the rule out there. Did you know the National Guard was also taking citizen's guns. That is a fact. I prevented such action on several occasions and brought them "up to speed" on the law. So does our N.G. qualify with your colorful description ("scumbags"). I guess not. They are not cops and everyone hates cops until they need one. The media puts out one minute of air time of cops saving lives and property for every hour they give you on their "bad" doings. Next time your in trouble call a fireman. Everybody loves them.

One nice thing about reading thousands of police reports and search warrant applications and returns is that you get a good sense of where police usually look for things - and where they don't. :innocent:

I find it interesting that when a citizen is arrested and pleads ignorance of the law they are responded to with "ignorance is no excuse" does that not apply to the officers involved? "With great power comes great responsibility" as such politicians, judges lawyers, police, etc. should be held to a higher standard than the joe schmoe citizen.

I agree that Police officers should be held to a higher standard....and we are. "Ignorance of the law" not being a defense applies to the police too. So please don't imply that it is any different for us. Cops are guilty until proven innocent. That hurdle is not enjoyed by average joe smoes like yourself. I have a "chip" because of after years and years of hearing ignorance from people who don't have the "stones" for this job ultimately wears on ya. I am intollerant of cop bashing and don't intend to soften up now on the subject. I am glad to hear that your distain does not extend to all officers. Maybe you could have been a little more clear up front about that. For the record I was not a fan of that Chief either. He was a product of "minority politics", not merit. Appoligies in return. I now lay down my pike...we can be friends again :).
