Am I the only one that has access to state land where I can go and camp and not even see a soul or worry with "campsite rules" like check in and checkout, and site fee, parking fee? Limted space?

I don't know of any like that, around here.

I tried the public campground once by a reservoir that my son wonted to fish, well anyway, I come across Paul Bunion and told him hay dumb a$$ I don't think the forest service would appreciate you defacing the camp ground and not only that, if you keep going the way your chopping this tree, it will land on your camp site (he didn't like my advice and a few words was exchanged but he stopped). The next morning two bully types decided to play fetch with there dog and throwing the toy in the lake while everyone was fishing and I said HEY AHOLE people are trying to fish (a lot of words was exchanged). The wife very tactfully said, THATS IT, YOUR NOT A YOUNG MAN ANYMORE, WE ARE LEAVING AND YOUR NOT ALOWED TO STAY IN A PUBLIC CAMPGROUND AGAIN. As we was packing up the neighbors gave us there fish and we left with our limit, I told the wife that at least I leave as the campground hero:innocent:
I wonted to go on a river trip with Jason in Yellowstone but public campgrounds are out and I couldn't see spending that much on a motel room.

Ah, now I remember why I love it here! Thanks Oly! Often places I go, I get the feeling I may be standing where no man has stood before. To me that is camping. Not saying I can't behave in the crowds....pretty sure I'll dislike alot of what I see though! I know it wouldn't work if I have to pitch my tent near the park restroom as is often the case.....

When I was much younger, we used to camp at this big reservoir, and water ski all weekend. We were regulars there. We stayed at a little camp ground, that the rangers came by once a day, to collect lot rent.
On night, there were some bikers camping on the other side of the camp ground. These sites were on a loop road, out on a peninsula. One drunk biker decided to blast around the loop road, on his Harley, at about 11:30 or 12:00. About 15 minutes later, he did it again. A couple guys went over, and asked nicely, for him not to keep waking everyone up. The bikers seemed OK, and said that they would try to keep that guy under control.
About 15 minutes later, he came blasting through again. Some guys went over there, and a few words were exchanged. (With the one guy...the other bikers were telling him to shut up, and go to sleep.)
About 15 minutes later, the guy came blasting around again....but this time he only made it about half way. It seems that someone had tied a ski-rope across the road, at neck level to a motorcycle rider. :innocent: (Snicker, Snicker)

Most everybody here loves being in the woods. It's just certain people that many steer clear of.
Oh, you bet. Deam Wilderness will let you camp all by your lonesome. A lot of other areas, too.
I've never figured them out, Oly. People toss crap where ever they go brain dead and judging by the amount of junk I find in the woods they must go brain dead a lot. When I scouted the area for our jamboree I ran into two morons tossing beer bottles in the lake. I waded out and picked up a couple and tossed them in their direction and told them they should dispose of them properly. My wife and I went out in the canoe and wound up picking up a half dozen floating around. I tossed a few more words at the shore line while doing it. My wife informed me that if I kept it up I wouldn't be able to go out by myself anymore. I wouldn't have made it on the profanity thread either. Sorry.
I know what you mean Rick, the only thing I can do is my #1 rule, leave the camp site cleaner than it was when I got there. I still don't have a problem looking someone in the eye and tell them that they are a hash and trash piece of crap for leaving there junk behind.
I also know that one day I will regret running my mouth.

When I was stationed in Maine, If it wasn't posted land you were good to go. That and the fact the the Navy has 13,000 acres of wilderness in northern Maine which was my playground.
Here in CA it's all about regulations and fees....... I thought this was a liberal state? More like a facist one!

The only time I am on a public campground is at dinnertime at someone's trailer, otherwise I have several hundred acres that aren't public. I know of houses or camps that have the door unlocked with a sign to please leave it clean. The one pic I posted the house(2br., bath, kitchen, wraparound covered porch) is never locked and all appliances, TV etc and phone are never abused nor is the riding lawnmower. A little trust sometimes goes a long way and nothing strange to have firewood cut or grass.
NO however you will find most on this site...............

OK people whoever dropped a rock on this guy's head should have dropped a bigger one.
Personally, I try to avoid those campsites (unless I'm babysitting turistas that want the amenities) and get as remote as I can on Crown or First Nations land. If it isn't posted private property, I'll camp there.

What he said..Much of Maine is owned by paper companies and they have a great land use program. You can spend weeks in the woods without seeing anyone.

I'm in michigan and I find it hard to "just go out and do it" without eventually being harrassed by the powers that be.
I know there are wild places, but the only ones I know require a long drive, free permit or pay permit, and you can't just go willy nilly and set up camp anywhere and start choppin down trees, building shelters and fires.
Heck, pretty soon they're gonna start making us pay to pick wild plants and mushrooms, or even birdwatch, LOL!
If there are places in Michigan where this can be done legally someone please let me know.

Had a couple of good spots, on a feeder stream to The Wisconsin river system, owned by the power company.
We canoe camped, up and down, during bow season for a few years.
We took along a rendezvous baker lean-to, set up a primitive camp, buckskins and all, on the upper river bank.
Other canoe-rs would come by and swear they had traveled thru a time warp.
One year it poured rain for the whole week, 'bout 50 degrees.
Gotta say those mountain men were tough, those hides(sleeping) and buckskins get reeeealy damp, and cold.
Was sorta fun, just seeing if we could "get by with what we brung".
Area now has been subdivided, lot of out of state summer homes, complete with docks etc.
50 ft easement along the edge of the stream, and it really pizzes them off when you walk it for duck hunting.
One guys gazebo make a really good blind, right on the water!
Guess they don't know what "easement" means.
Oh well......................

I am fortunate to have the Kissatchie National Forest within an hours drive. You can launch a canoe into a couple of the bigger streams and paddle for a couple of miles and it is like you are in another era. No one is crowding your space and no car noise. You will hear the occasional aircraft fly over, but other than that solitude.
There are a few places like that along the Saline River in south Arkansas and some of the other less traveled streams, but they are getting harder and harder to find. Ain't civilization great:online2long:.
You can do that on the Buffalo, too. From Route 14 down to the White River is pretty remote and amazing.

This is one of many, many reasons I prefer backpacking. I live in just a stunning location of natural beauty with a climate moderate enough to enjoy it nearly year-round. There are enough lakes and state/county campsites for your basic weekend camper, sport-fisher, or picnicker groups. These spots tend not to be much fun for me. These are the campers who want to back in their F4500 and unload a beer fridge, microwave, and TV off of the flatbed so they can camp overnight.
But these folks tend never to venture much further from their campsite than the park bathhouse. If you strap on a pack and hump a few miles, you find yourself in near absolute isolation. The few other rare folk you find out on the trail tend to be of a like mind and it is uncommon for me to run into a rude, messy, loud, or otherwise annoying backpacker.

I'm less then half an hour from the Monongahela National Forest. There are some good remote sites with overnight that are camp at your own risk. I'll finally have a chance to do a day hike there around Christmas when my daughter and son in law visit. Well probably hike at Seneca Rocks.
Google image search for Seneca Rocks:

I can't remember who said it but we always leave a camp site or trail cleaner then when we leave it.

RWC1969, I think XJ2000 was suggesting that you look (google) for a place. I have driven through Huron National forest.
I looked (googled) Michigan DNR and got this:
http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10365---,00.html
I also looked up National forest service Michigan and found this:

Your profile doesn't give much information for me to suggest a specific location based on your interests or abilities. You will have to continue looking yourself to find something that suits you're interests and location proximity.

Here getting off the beaten trail mostly invovlves a boat. I am native american so despite any laws, I beleive running water cannot be owned. I take full advantage of my thinking and include High Watermark property as listed for me to use. I hunt it i fish it and I camp on it. Never had a word said and yes I have been checked by DNR numerous times. Seems I am within the law. Now sorting out the above mentioned laws will take someone like Ken and then there is still the good ole boy rules here.

Gryffynklm, We went to a place quite a few years ago in the Manistee National Forest where primitive camping was supposedly allowed. We woke up the following morning to a ranger asking us to pack it up or face a misdeameanor offense. Turns out primitive camping was only allowed in the harshest of winter time periods when the lake effect snow reaches 6-10' deep and there is no road maintanence getting back into the spot. She said we could camp season round during that time frame, but good luck getting back in there. It seemed like too much of a hassle to me so I never have tried since. It's a 3-1/2 to 4 hour drive from here, huron nat'l is 2-3 hours away.
I'm sure people do it all the time and don't get caught, but I am not one to bother with the grief of it all. I don't want to worry about getting busted or having my equpment taken for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I contacted the DNR and they told me I could primitive camp in many areas as long as it's not within a 1/4 mile of a campground, primitive or otherwise. But, you must obtain a free permit and state exactly where you intend to camp.
If I were out on a 70+ mile trail of wilderness that I've never been on before I have no idea where I would camp. I would want to find a spot, or two, or three along the way and not be tied into any one spot.
I am looking into getting more info on the subject, but thought XJ2000 might be able to elimiate a lot of the homework on my part. He seems to know where places are where this can be done legally without all the red tape. I'd be looking for something within an hour of metro Detroit area as I really don't have the gas money to drive so far away.
Personally, I would like to take my fishing pole and a few other neccessities and go on a 4-6 week long excursion in May of next year. It is illegal to hunt on state land around here from April thru September so the .22 is out.

That sucks, but then they just want to find you in the case of an emergency. There is some amazing forest up that way. Perhaps you can get a topographical map of an area and get an idea of possible camp sights. I am lucky to have found a bunch of topo maps left by the previous owners. They worked for the forest service in Randolph County, WV. They even marked trails and made notes. Good luck.

When it comes to "Running water" usually it is not considered Trespassing unless the landowner owns Both Sides of the creek, stream, river, whatever as long as it is navigable. Then it is like a road where there is a certain amount of "Right of way" on either side. However if both sides are owned by the same individual, even the water there is considered theirs. A DNR officer told me that, how true it is, I don't know.
I just read it here on the internet so it must be true.

I like to go from gooseberry reservoir, Miller flats, Jose valley. Basically anywhere from Fairview skyline drive to mayfield. I prefer stream fishing over lake fishing any day and with all of the regulations on stream fishing I basically gave it up.

I went there this summer, and caught one. That is where we took the scouts for scout camp (we did our own). One of our leaders has a cabin looking down on gooseberry. When we fished Boulger reservoir, I actually caught my limit, and so did most of the adults. Some of the boys caught their limit, but everyone caught at least one. We also hit Electric lake, and a few others. Yeah, that area is awesome for fishing.

O.k. well maybe I should've emphasized a little. MI DNR is very strict on managing the forests. It will be very hard to find a place to just go "willy nilly" without the gvt knowing. There are places where I've never seen DNR. I guess I don't recommend just going out there and "chancing it", but I've done it. (Thats kinda what I meant in my previous post) And its going to be difficult to find some place within an hours drive. What area are you from?
This is the easiest thing I can suggest you do: Go here:http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10365_10883-31303--,00.html
Call them, and ask if they can mail you a camping card. It sucks, but the DNR doesn't make it easy to do much of anything in the forests.

Thanks xj! I know plenty of people who do just that without getting a permit. But, after looking at the website it appears you are supposed to be 1 mile, not 1/4 like I was previously told, from a campground. I'm gonna get ahold of the DNR and see if I can get multiple permits and then it shouldn't be a problem doing things all legal like. The way I understand it the permit is filled out on site and left, no need for pre-approval and the DNR wouldn't even know you're out there.
Things were explained to me differently before by the DNR.
I know Washtenaw county has a good long trail with endless woods and fields so being 1 mile away shouldn't be an issue.
I'm in SW Oakland county.
Come on down to Indiana. We don't have a lot of forestry in the northern end of the state but there are a few smaller locations as well as Dune's National Park. We're pretty easy to get along with.

When you spend time camping outdoors, you really start to appreciate the comfort and security of home. That same feeling can be created in your own backyard with strong Wood gates (https://fredsfencing.com/wood-fencing-gates/) that offer both privacy and a natural look. Just like the peaceful barriers created by trees at a campsite, well-made wooden gates help define your space while keeping things calm and safe. They bring that warm, rustic outdoor vibe right to your home.
