It has been raining here enough I am down to doing what I can inside so...been working on a hiking cane with a bit of utility in mind....

Thanks Ole man! I was hoping to get your approval, now it is a real "Thor"! It is made of Hickory. I'd enjoy floating a shiner on the basal wood handle plug! I ain't done yet, so look back at this post. I have a few more of those German medallions from hikes I did overseas with Dad. We were stationed at Hahn AFB 32 years ago...I think the first one shown is from the Blackforest. The business end is fitted for my CS Bushman Bowie. I'll have it up soon!

Very nice, CS. Wonderful art and great utility. I made one for each of my boys and beneath the whip stitch I wrote them a message. I figured if they get to the point they have to rely on the cordage then they could use a few words of encouragement. Now get busy and make your wife and your daughter one!!!

Looks very nice. Thanks for some great ideas. Since I will have time on my hands (and not a lot of money) I may just have to try and build something along these lines. I guess after finals next week, I should start digging around the woodshed to see if I can find some dried/cured Madrone branches. I sure as heck ain't going to find any dry stuff in the woods this time of year (at least not around here).

Looks like the inside would be a good place for a few hooks, weights, and lures. Hmm...I got's some thinkin' to do.:thumbup:

Very nice, nice to have some "stuff" handy when you need it.
I have been a fan of walking sticks for a long time, and have been lusting after a piece of "dimond willow".
Most of mine are made from twist elm, not pretty unless you finish them, but helpful for keeping your balance, poking at stuff, keeping other dogs at bay, lots of stuff.
I also like the "secret message" idea.

Great job. I cut a couple of dozen hickory and season them for a year or more. I learned many years ago as I have said several times that a walking stick is a great personal weapon also. I have studied for years and don't need one but always have one, in town or a larger one in the woods. I normally carve a wood spirit with a winding beard for better grip and avoid a "weapon" look.

Coot Your right I don't want it to look tactical at all. I plan to do a "wood spirit" just haven't got to it yet...I will have to sharpen my great aunts carving tools first. I guess they are probably well over 100 yrs. old now. I'll be adding pics as I go.

I forgot to add that I used a prusik knot to add a wrist hold to my stick. You can slide it up and down with the prusik and when you "lock" it in it won't slip.

Rick, got a photo of how your using the prusik? I kind of get it and I definetly know the not. I have used the prusik to climb trees and when working in a high angle environment with block and tackle. Course now we use mechanical prusiks.

I have a white wax wood walking stick that I bought from Cold Steel. It is strong as hell and definitely makes a formidable weapon in the right hands. I have been thinking of hollowing out the handle and wrapping some survival items into some para cord as well.

Good job on the stick. You gonna let that balsa float like jugging or hang on to it?

Pictures are much better than words. I took a piece of paracord, sealed one end and pressed it a bit with pliers while still soft. That kind of forms a point. On the other end I pulled the sheath back about an inch and cut the inner strands off. I then inserted the sealed end into the sheath and fused the sheath around the end. That gave me a loop of paracord.

Then I just looped it around the walking stick as the picture shows.

Wrap two loops. The harder you pull the tighter it is. Easy to slide the whole loop up and down but once you set the knot it's locked.

Climbers use this knot to climb rope with (as I understand it. Not like I do it). They can slide the knot easily up the rope and then when they put weight on it, it locks in place and won't slip.

The biggest problem I found when making mine was the business end. I finally wound up just using a broadhead screw to keep the bottom from wearing down, although I tried a few different things before the screw.

maybe 2 eyebolts in a walking stick near the center, maybe 24(?) inches apart, for a possible makeshift firebow ?

how much curve is needed for a firebow ?
it all depends on how you wrap the spindle

I like the eyebolt idea as well. Though instead of mounting them on my cane I plan to place several in the storage handle. It is what I will use to affix the bowie bushman to the business end when needed. I am working on that now. Like (Rick) said I will need something to protect the end. Funny I thought of using a field point too Rick, Now I am considering the sleeve that is used on rake handles I have a spare somewhere just have to locate it, then see how well or not it fits the bushman.

The problem with metal on the bottom is the stick will then slip on rocks. That's why I tried a couple of other things first including a rubber tip actually used for a cane. It worked great on rocks but you would have to glue it on to keep mud from sucking it off and I didn't want to do that. So I used the screw and I'm just careful when traversing rocks with it.

The original from Germany I have long outgrown had a metal point that was extemely pointy. Wish I still had it I'd use the tip from it.
