After Christmas we will have a date and a place after polling your votes. So just reply to the posts! Let me know if anyone has any ideas to help us plan a great time!

Fall Creek Falls has a few walk in primitive camping sites and a few off overnight trails. Really beautiful area with enough trails for a weekend.

Might I suggest you rank the sites from 1 to whatever. That way you'll have the work out of the way when it comes to selecting the second site to meet then the third and so on. Just move down the list.

I've previously posted pictures to most that I've been hiking through - Ocala National Forest (several locations, but so far I liked Juniper Springs the best), Fort Clinch, Little Talbot Island, or Cumberland Island (this is a Coastal Georgia Island accessible only by boat that runs twice a day). If anybody wanted to do something in January or February these may be good spots, albeit not all that centrally located.

We just got back from Cumberland Island, GA (actually, we went over Halloween, but time flies), and had a great time. To actually stay on the island, you typically need to make reservations 6 months out (although I've not tried in the winter). We stayed at the campsites, but for this group, a very primitive site might be best. The ones that have showers and toilets have no electricity, so they are pretty primitive too. It would not be car camping at all.

Anyway, Cumberland was great!

WOW! Looks like I am in the dark ages when it comes to camping! I think maybe I am spoiled! My camping trips never involve check in and check out times. Not bringing my own firewood? Huh?

I have always utilized my boats for camping and just go as I please. Stay as long as you like with no rules!

Guess I'll have to suck it up and do some of this fancy campin' to take part in this one.

I remember growing up...Dad just drove straight down in the woods in any National Park and set up camp. No campground for us!

Cowboy, I'd rather camp like you mentioned, but I was under the assumption that a place such as FDR would be suitable for this type of trip. Heck, if ya'll wanna get together and camp the old-old-fashioned way, we can meet in Middle/South Ga. and go camping on my family's land...just us and Mother Nature herself.

sacred meeting and burial place of the Weeden and Swift Creek Natives. two good size lakes full of fish, many hiking trails, beautiful landscape, facilities, and they have many shelters and some pioneer camp areas. They have festivals there several times a year and a few demonstration-events. It's on the top of my list for hosting SCRAPS events.

native muscogeans would walk as far as 18 days to collect a fire ember to carry home in a "cigar". The people were united by a single fire which was kept burning all year long. We refer to them as the "people of one fire" which im sure has an indian word that I don't know (I speak redneck which is barely english lol).

I live around an hour north of Chattanooga, TN. Close to a mountain named Mount Eagle. I'm pretty good for a 3-4 hour drive. How primitive is it going to be. Basically what is allowed and whats not.

This is a primitive, rugged site. Site is located by itself. Site has no water or electricity. No access to shower facilities. Site has pit toilet, fire ring, picnic tables. Site is located across from Terrora Campground. Camping includes a 3-sided elevated shelter, maximum capacity 25 (3 large tents or several small tents). Vehicle parking located approximately 30 yards from parking lot. Check-in at the Interpretive Center no later than 4:00 p.m.

I haven't heard of any such ban. I would think that you're close enough that any insect that could be in the wood would already be in this part of Georgia.

True, but I know wood from KY and VA are banned, and just wanted to make sure there was no such ban in effect.

Also note that you will need to bring a few gallons of water.

Never heard of the ban from TN to Ga. I live in TN and cut wood with my father-in-law. I take a load to my parents about 2 or 3 times a year, havent been pulled over yet.

We can't even move firewood from county to county in Indiana. Not all counties are affected but a good number of them are. The ones where the emerald ash borer has been found are quarantined.

SS, I think it would be more comradery than anything else...I may have a tip for you or you may have one for me. I don't see it as having scheduled workshops. It'd be nice of each member present had a skillset they could showoff at some point. It would also matter how many people can make the trip.

In Big Cypress you are supposed to fill out a back country pass. It is just a carbon copy form that you pick up at the trail head. You put one copy in the box and tie the other copy to your pack.

Other places down here you sign in and out.

Groups of 20 can get permits on Saturday and Sunday only. Groups of 30 can get permits Monday through Friday only. To protect the natural resource, no groups larger than 30 are allowed.
Weather and water flow conditions can restrict gorge floor access.

To go through the gorge floor you will also have to get wet. When I went there Thursday, they told us that we couldn't go because it was to wet... :blink:

You don't need a pass to go around the gorge. All the pictures that I've shown never needed the pass. I have never gotten the pass though it lets you go to the very bottom where there is no safety railing. And if that isn't good enough, there's also some other trails in the area.

Lol.. if you look at the little map of Georgia on the talulah site from the PM, you'll notice none of the major roads are anywhere close to the southwest corner. I'm in the opposite corner of GA from the event. Being close to an 8 hour drive and my current finances, I'm going to have to decline this time. If you guys do it again next year (or sooner) maybe I can go then.

I Hear ya Gryffylm, it is an unimaginable stress to most .. Hard to imagine
what I go through...anything less than perfect is not good enough for my boss or really me. I see it as a chess game and I play to win. Upper Mngt. is all 60-65. I am trying to be general manager and Quality Mngr/ Mfg. Engineer......we'll see how it pans out...Been with the company 20 yrs...and I am dedicated to winning. 3yrs. with "0" findingas speaks for itself. ISO 9001:2008.

I believe we canceled it or it just kinda died out. I didn't hear back from many people with all the pm's I sent and some had things to come up and weren't able to make it anyway. Figured if I went, I'd be there in the rain twiddling my thumbs by my lonesome self.

But that just means that we can pick another date where more people will be able to join us. (And I can be in MY car and not one with a bad master break cylinder!) :scooter:
