In a survival situation, short of expending calories to find bait, if you already had a lure or two in your kit, you'd be much closer to getting a meal. Flies are lightweight, small, and VERY handy. I've used store-bought flies for fishing in the creeks and have caught everything from bream to bass.

I am looking for someone who knows how to tie flies for fishing. I have several braintanned deer tails (though the skin isn't really important here) with nice long hairs. I have yet to smoke them, but will be doing so very soon.

My request is that anyone proficient at tying flies, post up a tutorial with lots of pictures showing (as primitive as possible) how to do this ourselves. I will give you a whole tail, all that I ask is you make one fly and make a video or take pics of the process to post on the board. This is something I have been wanting to learn for a while, but I figured we could all learn together.

If my request is out of line, Mods, please remove the post. I'm not entirely sure on the specifics of such a request.

FYI, Barnes and Noble has a beginner fly tying kit with instructions. It's pretty simple and fun to do on one of those cold nights when you don't want to go out.

slowcamaro... real nice video. for some reason I thought it was much more complex. I have done a little reading in the past on fly tying, but never actually took up the skill. I know that deer hairs are hollow and buoyant enough to keep a whole skin afloat. it would never need oil and the tail hairs are very long.
He makes it look easy.. I may try this soon, if there are no takers.

Anyone with deep pockets or specific trade items, contact me,as I have 45 years of tying "stuff" more variety then most fly shops no BS. Fur,feather,tools,hooks,books,etc.
Hope this is legal.

PM me your specifics and I'll get a tail in the mail. remember I gotta smoke them yet, probably this evening if the humidity is low enough.. I've been fighting with over 80% humidity all week.. not good for tanning.

also, if you can tell which one you want from the pic, I'll send that specific one. some have really interesting patterns.

YCC - To comment on the survival aspect your your OP. I would suggest a weir would be much more affective than just fishing. Like snaring or trapping, it allows you to "fish" while doing some other task such as gathering additional wood. Nets, obviously, would gather more fish than traditional fishing, too.

that is high on my list of things to learn, Rick. I've been waiting for a fella who ties nets to get a chance to sit down with me and teach me. It's gonna take a lot of cordage.

YCC - A weir is nothing more than a way to trap fish. They can be pretty darn simple or really exotic. Basically, it gives them a way to swim in and then they can't find their way out....or.....it sort of herds them into an area where you can easily catch them. They are so efficient that most states ban them as a way to fish with exceptions for indigenous people.

Got a 100% chance of rain today and town is already flooding.. Toss in the tornados falling out of the sky and it looks like I'll have time to give this a try. First attempt will be with modern hooks. Might try to make another with bone and thorns later.

I gotta admit I'm a little disappointed that there are no pro takers here, but I'll do my best to make decent pics and instructions. Gonna use a small tuft of brown and white deer tail hair and my own hair as the wrappings.

That's my problem... I got enough hobbies that I can never be bored.

I didn't get a chance to tie one.. got hold of a hide that just didn't want to grain.. took twice as long as it should have, but I didn't give up. Once that was done I sat down in the "chop shop" with a nice fire and a glass of whiskey with the wife and just enjoyed relaxing and talking. I'm a slacker, yeah... I will get it done eventually though :D

I want YOU to tie the flies and take pics. tell us as best you can. If you can do a video that'd be really great, but good stills will do. Let me know. I have several. They don't have to be real pretty.. just functional in my opinion. I wouldn't even know where to begin.
Also, does it matter if they are smoked?

I'm going to take this challenge a step further, if I can, and try for a fly pattern that uses only materials you'd normally have with you in a basic survival kit and tools you'd have with you, or can make yourself. (Several of my fly-tying implements are very specialized.)

I've got the materials and thread figured out - but help me think of what I'd use in place of fly cement. I'm thinking pine resin? Or would that take too long to harden. . . ? dab of wax, maybe?

That's simple. Coho flies. I don't know how to even tie flies but I can tie them just wraping the hair to the hook a wraping it around hook on one end.

PS That's the only kind of fly I use.

yep. in a primitive situation, nothing beats pine pitch as a binder. I intended to use my own hair as wrapping thread, hide glue as the temporary tack, and pine pitch as the final sealer. Deer hair isn't as long as the tail hair.. you sure you don't want a tail?

Yes, in various sizes. They can also hold a little scent. 3 senses bring the fish to your hook and sight is the least of these in terms of distance. you can't see far under water and the murkier the water... Scent will travel farther and so will sound. Something to keep in mind when selecting lures.

Ok. So I went for it.
I don't know squat about tying flies.
I do know how to make string, and glue, and clamps.
I haven't read much at all about it, but now I'll probably read more.
I wasn't trying to mimic any bug, didn't use a pattern or anything like that.

The initial wraps are done with my own hair as the string. No I didn't cut a patch out of my hair lol. I simply ran a brush through it, cleaned out the brush like normal, but didn't throw the hair out. I took about 8 strands, about the same length and twisted them into about 12" of string. I made two strings like that.
The hefty wrap is a fine piece of backstrap sinew. When I needed to hold something in place temporarily I used hide glue in the little stove I posted about a while back.
Very crude and I won't claim to be a fly-tyer. Not much to explain about the process for now, because I still really know nothing at all about it. I basically just tied the hair to the hook and gave it "wings". I know it's crude and ugly.

I dunno, you think it'll look like a bug? I'm ready to go fishing and try it :D
(any excuse will do to go fishing hehe)

I will bite :tongue_smilie: This is not true. You will still need flotant to keep your fly above water. Only waterproof buoyant materials will float continuously.

Give me a few days and I will build the vise from wood as I mentioned to you and tie flies as primitive as I can per your request. I am also doing a tutorial on how to build a fiber glass Take Down longbow on another site and working on knapping and finding a suitable hand drill replacement.

On top of all that my brother is very very ill and I will be staying with him during the days a few days this week, but I will show you how. I will tie poppers and bass flies for bream and bass.

Remember the earliest flies recorded were a hook , red yarn and 2 feathers used by the Romans .

If you make it too large you will have a hard time casting it. Remember it is small like a bug.

Cool fly though.

I am thinking a dragon fly pattern would be easy for you. visualize what a fish would see as it lays on the water not jut what it looks like to us. It is the impressions that the fish see. The don't know its a bug, they do have an instinct that tells them something about that is food. There have been a lot of studies on this and it is proven to be very effective.

There are vids out that do a good job of explaining how to tie flies. I did the kit thing years ago with the son. I became bored with the "right" flies and ventured out.
So, I took a few hairs from the dog and caught a fish.
